().Qj: Jones, Hawthorne and Anderson jam for bucks at Mosier Valley By Charlie Wiese ARLINGTON, TX,JAN. 6 On a near perfect day for racing, spectators were treated to some excellent racing as north Texas MXers Davey Jones, i Dennis Hawthorne and Monte Anderson staned the 1980 season in style. The morning program proved exciting as the racing got better with each drop of the ~ate. In Mini Junior action, Keith "Tiger" Foytik (Suz) got back on top of things after a dry spell. Foytik. bliued the field of young riders with Jason Upshaw (Yam) getting the closest in both rounds. Mini Senior action was intense with "Killer" Carroll Richardson (Yam) making an impression with his powerful bike. Bryan "Boom Boom" Abernathy (Yam) stayed on top, however, with Richardson dropping to fourth after a fall in round one. Greg Baker (Suz) managed a second with a Fair of consistent rides with Phil Dillon (Yam) third after two rounds. Mike Foytik (Suz) was "the Man" once again in 100cc Novice action. Foytik gave the field a backside view in both motos with Richie Standifer (Yam) getting the nod for second after' trading finishes with David Douglas (Yam). Foytik. (Suz) went 2 for 2 as he and Robby Wilson (Suz) battled in 125cc Novice Division I. Foytik received the nod after a race-long battle with Wilson in round two. The pair of speedsters accumulated a sizeable lead while battling for the top slot, with Dean Miller rounding out the top three on his new Yamaha. Jimmy Barker (Suz) took Division Two of the 125cc Novices when bad luck dropped "Bad" Bubba Neal (Yam) to fifth overall after winning round one of the event. Chris "Rocket" Rena (Hon) was second with a consistent !Hl score, followed by Mickey White (Yam) and Jerry Burnap (Yam). The Over 50 Experts provided the thrills and spills next with Gary "Lead Foot" Chandler putting his Maico Magnum out front in both rounds. Dud Gage (Yam) pushed himself and his bike to the limits in an effon to unseat Chandler. However, a fall in round two cost Gage his chance at the overall. KTM-mounted Jacyee McMahon continued hil winning ways in the 250cc Novic~ with a consiltent 1-2 finish. Rodger Schellenberger (Yam) was close, but hil third in round one held him to second after two tight races. Open Novice winner J_ Crawford T. (Yam) thumped his way to victory dco-Color.do·.y . with Greg Butler (Bul) putting his blue bike in the winner's circle by fLnishing second in both rounds. The afternoon program began with the usual action-filled practice session. that is followed shortly thereafter by the 125cc Intermediate class. Terrv Tinney (Hon) led the sweep of "red rockets" in that class by taking both motos. Tinney's wire to wire rides left Johnny Portman (Hon) in second and Aubrey Wright (Hon) third after two rounds of racing. The 125cc Pros pounded ground next with Darren "Crash" Rhoten (Hon) leaving the troops behind. When Rhoten's bike can stand the punishment and "Crash", doesn't, there is no catching him and he proved it in round one. Round two had Rhoten at track side with a broken throttle leaving Davey Jones (Suz) to take top honors with the "Fluid Form," Randy Sullivan (Suz), moving up to second after two action filled motos. "Gassin' " Glen Goodier (Hon) and Bill Howe (Hon) put on the show in the 250cc Intermediate class. Howe lead from the start in both motos with Goodier coming from behind to take him toward the end of each moto. Dennis "Orange Crush" Hawthorne (C-A) put the squeeze on the 250cc Pros by taking the overall on his orange bike once again. Hawthorne broke away early in round one and set a rapid pace that enabled him to win with ease. In round two, a four man battle developed between the "Orange Crush". Robbie Pannell (Bul), Mike "Dr. j" Jones (C-A) and Derek Wedding (Hus). The battle went down to the last lap that began and ended with Pannell leading and winning on his blue bike. The "Orange Crush" held on for second with "Dr. j" dropping to fourth behind Wedding. Overall it was Hawthorne (1-2), Pannell (4-1), Jones (3-4) and Weddil}g with a 5-3 effort. The open Classes, Intermediate and Pro, were dominated by the "yellow birds" with Kenny "Quick Draw" McGraw (Yam) taking the Open Int. class and Monte Anderson (Yam) dominating the Open Pro vent. In round one of the Open Pro class, Anderson and Ricky "Reamer" Kidd (Yam) battled until Kidd was forced to slow with a flat rear tire. At about the same time, Anderson landed hard off a jump and bent his alrready low bars even lower. With the pair riding handicapped, Bobby Kyle (Yam) dropped Kidd to third with Anderson barely holding on for the win. In round two, Anderson and Kidd resumed the battle for the lead with Anderson winning both the battle and the war. Kyle followed in third. • NOTICE ATTENTION BAY AREA DEALERS AND SUPPLIERS 0") ~ WE HAVE PLANNED THE BAY AREA MOTORCYCLE AND ACCESSORY CONSUMER SHOW TO BE HELD IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE BAY AREA SUPERCROSS RACES.
