For the last race of the year it
sure was wet. The crowd watched
from under the E Street bridge,
however, in the relatively sheltered
sands of the Feather River, a marked
contrast to the mud-covered motocrossers slogging it out in the slop.
Billy Grossi conti!lued to improve
his racing skills in preparation for the
new year and the upcoming NorCal
Winter Series by winning yet another
250cc Expert show with relative ease,
as did Eric McKenna in the Open
class. McKenna finished nearly a
minute in front of Joey Schlag who
showed that he could be the kid to
beat in 1980 by taking second in both
classes.
Grossi had little trouble winning
both ends of the 250cc Expert class on
his Moore & Sons/Moto-X Fox Husky.
Schlag had to scuffle for second overall
with a 3·2 effort against Starr Needham who beat him the first time.
Needham used the third overall to
qualify for the Oakland amateur supercross event. thoull'h. Jimmy Robertson
put together a 5-6 score for fourth
overall with Pat Wilson futh due to
4-8 finishes.
Neil Goforth on his Bank of
America special won the 250cc Junior
mud run with a 2-1 score while Larry
Coleman did the opposite on a Coleman's of Stockton Husky for second.
Larry Slate pieced together a consistent 3-3 for third over Marc Bowman.
The first division of 250cc Novices
was a runaway for Paul Sweeney with
Scott Stouffer coming up with a
second over Marty Sanchez's effort in
the sloppy sand. Division two wasn't
quite so easy for Mike Ferland as he
had to come from behind in the
second moto to tally a 1-4 for the
overall with Frank Blanke going 6-1
for second. Ricky Medford claimed
third over Randy Harrell.
Tim Aston had little trouble
winning the combined Mini show and
showed why he will wear the number
one Mini motocross plate for '80. First
Junior was Keith Fox. Fred Wilder
rode his RM 80 to first Novice over
Scott Thornbum and Gary South.
Eric McKenna won the Open Expert
class on his Eurocycle Maico as easily
as Grossi did it to the 250cc class.
leading from the onset and pulling
away with every short lap. Schlag had
a good run at McKenna in the second
moto, leading early, but got off his
new KTM at one point. He worked
back up and passed Jeff Cloutier for
two second spots and second overall.
Brad Emery took third with a 3-4,
followed by Cloutier and Charlie
Smart.
Ed Cummings put together a consistent 2-2 for the Open Junior win
with Rick VanZant 4-1 and second
overall in front of Gary Fargo and
Kenny Henze.
Jeff Cropper won the 125cc Expert
race after both early moto leaders
dropped out. Stacy Thornton took the
second over K~n McKenzie.
Mark Olund didn't mind being
called a mudder as he aced both ends
of the 125cc Junior class on his
Hayward Yamaha YZ. Ruben Villarreal
posted a 4-4 effort for second overall in
front of Jeff Nichols and Mike
Whalen.
Dave Nordin won the first division
of 125cc Novices with Ace Carter in
for second and Chris McCurdy third
over Lauren Godbee and Jim
Bouchard. Ricky DeCarlo won the
second division with a 2-1 show and
Tony Serpa combined a pair of threes
for second over MikeJohnson who won
the first moto but only placed fifth in
the second for third overall.
