When the green light flashed in the 0-65cc class, all the bikes were packed like sardines in the first tum. Predictably. several bikes went down and a restart was called. In the restan. "Bubba" Willie McCoy (Yam) downed his bike in the first tum and Chrissa Douglass (Yam), too close to avoid going over his bike, lost control and wheelied into the fence. Finally. after another restan. Phillip Dyson (Suz) , sponsored by Clark Wheeled Sports, took the lead with Jason Festavan (Suz) following closely. T,he final order was Dyson, Festavan and McCoy. In the 85cc Trophy race. the riders stayed in the marbles for twO laps. Then Joe Hodges, sponsored by L.B.R.T.• and CowlOwn Yamaha's Lane Gulley broke loose and left the rest in a pack. Gulley powered past to take .the lead, but it was really touch and go with Hndges hot behind him. Larry Godwin (Yam) and Andy Klick (Hon) battled for positions behind them. Godwin lost out after downing his bike in the third tum. The final tally showed Gulley in the winner's circle with Hodges second and Klick third. In the Powder P.uff class, Brenda Pratt (Yam) matched the lead and carried it all the way to the checkered flag. Roxanne Cox downed her bike to give Pam Waters (Hon) her debut as second place winner. After the restan, Eddie McCoy (Yam). sponsored by Knowles Yamaha, trailed the rest of the pack. Dyson (Hon) and Glenn Waters (Hon) played cat and mouse, but Dyson got caught in the trap when his bike slid out in the third tum on lap eight and he had to be carried off the track. the victim of a broken leg. With Dyson out, Waters was able to take second and Dave Moore (Yam) third. We all wish you a speedy recovery Phil Dyson. After winning the 125cc Trophy class. Gregg Harrison and his Honda 500 came back to take the win in the Open Trophy, but not without an epic battle with Pat Kennedy (Bul). In the turns. In the Open Expen race. Bill Herndon on a Bultaco went out and controlled the lead all the way to the checkered flag.
