On each and every credit card receipt, he writes, "Motorcycles save .gas'" • Movie Review: Quadrophenia: Easy RIder of the 70's By Rex Reese When Easy Rider came out 10 years ago, it made a contemporary statement about a certain lifestyle in America. There haven't been any movies like it since, except for QJ.uJdropheniG. with some qualification. being the exception. Quadropheni4 isn't a biker movie, but if it were made in America, it would probably have turned out that way. Motorcycles are not the stan in fact, rock and roll plays a heavy pan - but they add vital substance to the characten who make the story. They are highly visible throughout the movie but they aren't used as gimmicks. Instead, they are used for their value as symbolic reflections of twO violently opposed groups of British youth, the Mods and Rockers who fought each other during the mid1960's. , The movie is about Jimmy (played by Phil Daniels), a young Mod who gets caught up in the happenings of the time domlDated by the Mod and Rocker wan. Mods wore suits, had shon hair, popped pills (mostly speed, which the British call "leapers"), and rode garishly outfitted motor-scooters. Tbeir arch-enemies, the Rockers, dressed in black leather, wore jack boots, had duck tail hair do's and rode Triumphs; they had personalities that makes "the Fooz" loolr. like a Boy Scout. Despite their intense hatred for . each other, both groups lived life to the ragged edge, life which cu1minated in their weekend rioa at reson towns. Jimmy experiences thia with the intense desperation of youth on the brink of exploding or falling apan. He panies, pops pills, drinks, fiKhts with his parents (who are indifferent to him) and Rocken. The conflllion that rules his life comes out as he runs while some Mods beat up a friend, who also happens to be a Rocker. This lifestyle comes to its climax when Jimmy and other Mods gO to the seaside reson of Brighton to have it out with the Rockers in one huge riot which wrecks the town. There, he falls for a girl, but it's the peak for Jimmy before the long slide down. The riot gets him fired from his job and kicked out of his boUle; the girl dumps him. Jimmy later has an accident on his scooter, the prize of his life, and wrecks it. He desperately, aimlessly, returns to Brighton where, after stealing another scooter, makes his ultimate statement, in one crashing moment, about the futility of his lifestyle. As mentioned before, motorcycles aren't gimmicks in this movie; they serve as much as symbols of the characters' lives as they do for transponation. Mods' scooten are covered with stickers, tons of chrome, have at least two headlights and carry a dozen rear-VIew mirron. The Rockers rumble about on their big black Triumphs which look every bit as menacing as their ownen. The Mods sound like a pack of angry wasps when they gang together on their scooten; when the Rockers take to the road, they sound like a flight of B-29's. Quadropheni4 is based upon the 1975 album of the same name by the Wbo, famous for a movie based on another album of thein called TommJ. But, unlike TommJ, Q)uul.ropheni4 is not a rock and roll opera; Instead, the music serves as a backdrop for the action, characten and story on screen. The movie does have its faults. The story is depressing and is confusing at the end, and the Cockney accent with which many of the characters speak is so thick you almost need an inter]Jreter. But, then, Quadropheni4 is not a movie that was made to be easily undentood in the fint place, much less designed for the American audience. On the other hand. it is the best example since Easy RUin of bow an intelligent statement of lifestyle is made via motorcycles without being stupid or hokey. Quadropheni4 also has good photography and direction (by Franc Roddam) which tries its best , to tell a tale of recent English history. Then there is the rock music of the Who, along with several other groups of the mid·60's, which sets the tone of the period excellently. 1£ you want to lee a movie which is more than rock, motorcycles or gang fighting could offer individually; if you want a movie with a chaDenging theme and content, then QJ.uJdrophmia is wonh watching. •
