Riden here have a lot of bold determination in racing; such was the case with Bill Herndon. a 16-year-old Euless, Texas rider. A track accident from the previous weekend caused Herndon to fall victim to an arm injury. Tonight though. because the "Ace" was gelling in the way, he removed the splint and took first in the 125cc trophy heat. In the main, Herndon (C-A) was in third position on the seventh lap with Keith McCullough (Hon) and Gregg Harrison (Hon) in the lead. Passing McCullough, Herndon came on strong chasing after Gregg Harrison who was in the lead. But Harrison, sponsored by B&B Cycles, controlled the lead for the win ahead of Herndon and McCullough. In the 85cc Trophy, Larry Crenshaw (Carters Yamaha) had no difficulty gelling to the checkered flag. Joe Hodges (Hon L.B.R.T.) rode his machine to second. There was a "private" battle going on between Larry Godwin (Yam) and Lane Gully (Yam), both sponsored by Cowtown Yamaha. for high points standing. Godwin, who was ahead in points, was passed by Gully on his 75 model Yam and Gully ably rode off with third place. . The red flag came out for Pat Kennedy and Kelvin Cley (Bul) in the beginning of the Open Trophy class. Restarting, the red flag was brought out again for Pat Kennedy and Andy Klick. After the third restart, Gregg Harrison (DFW Honda/B&'B Cycles) smoked the rest of the pack and led the race to the checkered flag. Andy Klick (Yelvington Racing Heads Honda) ripped past Tom McCroskey (Bul) and Keith McCullough (Hon) to gain on Pat Kennedy (Yam). Kennedy, who was flying on instruments, roared home to take second and Andy Klick was right behind for third. In the Open Expert, Steve Gulledge, Gregg Harrison and Charlie Orr were packed tight in the beginning of the first lap with Herndon trailing close. Steve Gulledge broke loose on his Bultaco, tuned by Glenn Waters, to take the lead with Charlie Orr hemming in second. On the last lap, Gulledge's on form performance was brought down when he was clipped accidentally by Charlie Orr. GNCTexas Regional Championship hits Rio Bravo By Mike Reilly HOUSTON, TX, NOV. 18 The GNC Regional Championship, a qualifier for the Grand National Championship International Finals in the Houston Astrodome next March, not only highlights the Texas Regional fall season every year, but is without doubt the most important race preceeding the Astrodome Finals. First of aIL, this event graduates 20 of the maximum 100 riders per class invited to the Dome. Of the 600 entrant~ here today at Rio Bravo for the 1979 Texas Regional Championship, many came from surrounding states ~nd even Mexico. The 1979 edition of the championship was simply great. The weather was perfect, the track fast and challenging and nine paSt GNC Grand National Champions were- on hand to add a little star quality. Bosch Spark Plugs again donated their support and money towards the 79-80 GNC Series including today's race. Derek Wedding from Manhall, Texas, the 1978 GNC Rider of the Ye.ar, and a fellow who makes bookends out of the six-foot Astrodome trophys as a hobby, shocked no one by winning the 250ec Expert. and Open Expert classes for the Howard Racing Team. The tough 16year-old on a Honda outran Ricky Madole, Damon Reichle, and GNC superstar Mickey Pizzitola. Wedding's starts in both motos of the 250cc class pnt him among the first five, soon thereafter to pass who ever happened to be in the lead, usually veteran Wyman Priddy. Madole, Reichle and Pizzitola were generally involved in fierce passing and re-passing both motos. Priddy would fade back under the pressure of the youngsters, and Chris Hipp and Jeff Edwards waged their own private battle somewhat back in the pack. Derek Wedding jumped on a 400cc Suzuki and all over the competition in the Open Expert class. Jeff Shaw on a Husky and Tommy Hudson with a Yamaha rode steady and efficient motos for second and third overall. There were no particularly interesting individual battles as the leaders generally strung out into a parade. Kyle Landrum, who has been so hot at Rio Bravo in the 125cc Expert class that th~ pit crew dumps ice water on his head just before the start, blistered the field again on his Conroe Suzuki RM both motos in 11 no-contest situatior.. However, some of the best . racing of the day involved Jerry Surber Jr., Darin Eames and Keith Davis.. Surber and Davis on Hondas and Eames with a Suzuki, were locked into mortal combat both motos. This spiritied contest by three of Texas' soon-to-be greats not only resulted in some brilliant in-fighting but some post-race inflammatory discussion as well. Bryan Taylor showed up for the Regional and signed up for the lOOec and the 125cc Intermediate class. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west; there are natural phellOllleJla that no one even bothers to doubt.
