good for the class win and the number one Senior plate in 1980. Factory AA rider Rick Munyon (Hon) dropped his only point by getting lost here as did 1979 number one Open rider Ken Lewis, Jr. on his DMG Maico. Jay Tullis (Hon) had already wrapped up the 200cc class honors for the year so he brought out an XR500 thumper to ride a bike with horsepower to match his body. Other than briefly getting lost Jay dip quite well on the big XR and is considering riding it in the Open class next year. Back to Goler Road was as far as the C riders would go each day but the A's and B's continued on for a trip around Government Peak in the Rand Mountains. The third loop featured some challenging terrain but the speed averages were fairly sedate and most A riders were able to stay on time. One exception was AA rider Mike Godfrey (Mai) who mired himself while trying to pass on a rocky hill and dropped two points at the next check. Doug Tullis' (Hon) chances for number one in the 125cc class ended when he lost a masterlink a few miles before the finish Saturday. With the limited participation in the 125cc class Doug's competition, Jerry "Countdown" Counts, only needed to fInish to get enough points to take the year's 125cc honors and Jerry was dancing on the sut of his Can-Am when it crossed the finish line Sunday, Pat Lehman also got the finish she needed to take the Women's title for the year. Saturday's trails were re-run Sunday in the opposite direction with a few of Saturday's steep downhiUs being bypassed, The only thing missing was a check-in/check-out special test section to make the racers happy. Gamer Palenske suffered a real heartbreaker when he appeared to have zeroed the enduro but engine problems five miles from the finish dropped him out of the running however his brother Grant fmished well enough on his DMG Maico to take the top spot in the Open class for the year. KTM-mounted Randy Liebig's zero score was good for third overall. first for the day in the 250cc class, and earned him enough points to move past Dan McKinney into the number two spot in the 250cc standings. Number one in the 250cc class had already been wrapped up by . Wheelsmith Maico-mounted Mike Adams for the third consecutive year. The fact that two fonner desert racers took the top spots in the final AMA District 117 enduro of the 19705 points out how much enduros have changed over the past decade. Ten years ago winners rode DTh and kept time with pocket watches. but today factory-sponsored riders with prototype machinery and digital electronic clocks are the standard.
