You missed one Kevin Wagoner was geared to win. New Texan Brian Myerscough teers up the Sayers MX turf. It was all Howerton at Texas' unofficial Sayers Trans-USA By John Rannikko Jr. SAN ANTONIO, TX, NOV. 11 Contrary to all the printed race schedules this year, there was a Trans-USA motocross in Texas. Although the "Rhinestone Cowboy", Kent Howerton. had already clinched the Trans-USA points title the previous weekend in the last scheduled (and official) race. he added a pair of firsts at· the "unofficial" San Antonio round to continue his hot, winning ways. With the list of Pros that showed up (Howerton, Myerscough, Kudalski and Stutts) and the riders who were expected but didn't show (Stackable, Wize, and Pizzitola) the impressive lineup could have been that of a Trans-USA event. Brian Myerscough is relocating to San Amonio where he can conveniently practice all year round with fellow team Suzuki rider, Kent Howerton. Don Kudalski is visiting friends and preparing for the r lorida Series by training and racing in Texas a board a 250 Yamaha. The 250cc/Open Expert fU'5t moto start belonged to Kent Howerton as he put the Open Suzuki sideways to make the first turn. Joe Davis (C·A) had the inside line off the start but got the door closed on him by David Stutts (Yam). Joey Balcom (Hus). Brian Myerscough and Don "Killer" Kudalski trailed Howerton through the first turn. On the first- lap the Rhinestone Cowboy laid out the format for his race day as he pulled out a big lead. Howerton never looked at the back of another rider's jersey unless he was lapping the rider. Stutts followed through Howerton's already·settling dust cloud while Balcom and Myerscough screwed their throttles to the Stops and white-knuckled it down the finish line straightaway, one daring the other to shut off last into the tum. Myerscough won the dare as he took over third place. "Killer" 'Kudalski, Neill Cooper (Hon), Kevin Horton (Suz), Mike Bradshaw (Hus) and Charlie Martin (KTM) rounded out the lOp nine frontrunners on the first lap. Myerscough began encroaching on Stutts early and was on his back fender on lap two. By this time Kudalski was pushing Balcom for fourth and Horton was threatening Cooper for sixth. "Passing" was the key word for the rest of that lap as StuttS. Balcom and Cooper were overtaken. As Howerton led, the top ten positions remained unchang~ 'till "Killer" pulled into the pits with a broken rear hub. By mid-molO Howerton began lapping riders 'till only Myerscough and Stutts were on the same lap at the finish. Horton slapped a pass on Balcom around the midpoint of the moto and they held on to finish fourth and fifth respectively. Howerton was fast and smooth into and out of turn one on the second moto 250cc/Qpen Expert start. Doug Paley (Hon), Joe Davis (C-A), Myerscough and Stutts were rounding the turn behind Howerton when a little too much throttle spit Paley on !Us ear in the sand. Everyone got around the downed Paley without a catastrophe and Paley got up in sole possession of last place. With a borrowed rear wheel assembly, Kudalski copped second place and put three seconds on Myen.cough, who led Stutts by another five seconds; Joe Davis. Martin, Cooper, Cardwell. Balcom and Billy Harrison (Hon) filled out the top ten spots on lap one. Davis dropped ':lut of the picture and Howerton continued to1ad. At mid-moto Kudalski held four seconds on Myerscough and seemed to have a secure second place in this moto 'till he stalled his engine with too much rear .brake,. allowing Myerscough 10 pass. Kudalski was unable to reel in the speeding Myerscough and had to settle for a second moto fmishing order of Howerton, Myerscough, Kudalski, Stutts and Charlie Martin. Howerton, Myerscough and StUltS got 1-2-3overall, followed. by Horton and Martin. The 250cc and Open Intermediates ran together although they were scored separately. San Antonio rider Jeff Frazier 'cleaned up in the 250cc Intermediate class with a pair of well earned fU'5lS aboard a CR250 Honda. After earning a second place in the first molO, Jeff Ellis (C-A) was chasing Kyle Powell (Mai) (the Open Intermediate leader) in the second molO. Both riders came nying over a high speed jump; Ellis' back wheel kept climbing and he landed in a front wheel hand stand that sent him over the bars and tumbling down the track. One of the hairiest get-offs seen in a long time put Ellis out of the trophy list. Fortunately he didn't get his name on an ambulance list, as he wasn't seriously hurt. Powell continued on, (the bikes never touched) fmishing 2-1 for the Open Intermediate overall win_ Since Bob Hannah broke his leg while waterskiing, it seems. to have become fashionable for motocrossers to get injured outside of the sport. A football injury sidelined the "Bandera Bandit", Bryan Taylor, with a broken leg. Reports have it that the 80cc/lOO/125 Moto X Fox/Yamaha MX ace will have to sit out about six weeks. Brien Zettner (Suz); heck of a fun race. New additions to the track, cool (not cold), sunny weather and a little moisture in the dirt made the day ideal for racing. When the flag dropped, Chad Woods powered his 400 Suzuki into the lead. Meanwhile, an unlikely meeting occurred when then 400 Yamaha ofJim McBride found the 100 Yamaha of Corey Cope. As hard as it may seem to believe, McBride got the worst of the deal and had to have one of the bikes lifted off his body. Cope jumped back on his bike and went on to win the 100cc class, while Jim took a few laps and called it quits for the day due to a battered body_ While Woods increased his overall lead. Dave Emerick was riding to the max on a 1976 silver tanked CR 125 Honda. After a few laps of running first 125cc, Dave parted company with his bike, putting Mitch Rorabaugh in the lead of that class_ Emerick finally had to drop out, but this was one of his first rides since his injury early in the summer and he gave it all he had. The big race of the day involved Chad Woods, Bud Lee, and Kevin Wagoner. Woods held the lead for the first few laps with Lee, after a middle of the pack start. gaining each lap. After a good dice. Bud got by Chad and started pulling away until trouble hit. His throttle cable frayed so a pit stop was necessary to change cables. Chad inherited the lead along with a new shadow in the form of Kevin Wagoner. Woods hadn't been riding much lately and eventually fatigue set in, giving Wagoner his chance for the lead with about four laps to go_ While all this excitement was going on up front, the rest of the crew was having a hey day. Jerry Jones was simply out for a good time and he rode that way (hard to believe). He was having so much fun he stopped for a cool one on the back part of the track_ In fact, I heard a rumor he stopped for more than one. Even Mike Clegg took it easy; he. was the only 200cc entered. Why else would he have made a pit stop just for some Skoal? I'm glad I wasn't riding behind him! In the end, Kevin Wagoner put it all together for a much deserved overall and the 250cc class win just ahead of Mike Lee; Chad Woods took the Open class. Mitch Rorabaugh brought his Suzuki in for the 125cc win and Corey Cope won the loocc class. It was a great day with good racing, too bad so many riders missed it.
