Larry Roeseler and jim Fishback brought their desert bikes - Larry's Husky 590 and jim's YZ Yamaha out to Carlsbad but didn't malte any changes at the track. , "I'll change it during the week," Roeseler decided. He plans the standard modifications - lower the suspension, din track tires and passibly a stronger front brake. Dave Aldana was the star of the paved turn right behind the pit area as he pitched the knobby-tired Hallman XR500 Honda in sideways. KYB forks and shocks handle the suspension chores on the Hallman Racing machine. "Did you flow the head?" Aldana asked the Hallman mechanic. "I think you better," David responded to the mechanic's negative reply, "I think we need more horsepower." Team Kawasalr.i, it appears, will be the best represented in The Superbikers event'. Jimmy Weinert and MX Team Manager Steve johnson showed up with a 440 works bike with different jetting, higher gearing, Goodyear DIT tires and a single disc front wheel brake. "We're running everybody, just about. .. " Steve listed Weinert, Brad Lackey, Jeff Ward and Warren Reid as definttes and Larry Wosick and Chappy Blose as possible Team Kawasaki riders at The Superbikers. Dave Erode arrived with father Floyd and a borrowed Honda XR500 to try his hand at the dirtl pavement combination. The bike had knobbies mounted on both ends and that, said road racer Erode, would be the first change. "We'll try Goodyear DIT 115 or Dunlop K70s, maybe," David thought. "Gotta get a little more horsepower out of it, too, Dad!" The senior Emde agreed. "We'll lower it a couple inches. I'd like to be able to drag my knees on this road race track - I'd feel right at home. But that'd be pretty tough on this bike," he admitted. AMA National Speedway Champion Mike Bast came out to test one of his TT500-based bikes. "I left the good bike at home," said Mike. The one he'll ride in The Superbikers is the same 650cc HiPerKinetic bored-out TT500 that he rode in Olympiad competition. Bast was running Goodyear DIT rires front and rear, but thought he'd try a trials universal pattern. Finally, a half hour after the 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. practice session was due to end, john Wincewitz rolled in amid cheers from the flat trackers in the pits and unloaded his XR750 HarleyDavidson. the only one in the group to chOOM: that particular machine. And with only a few laps practice and no set-up at all, Wincewitz was in the hunt. Probaby the most surprising yet encouraging discovery that afternoon in Carlsbad was that 450ec two-stroke motocross machines, 500cc thumpers and 750cc twin TT bikes were registering very nearly identical lap times. At two minutes on a two-mile course. it's easy to see that speeds are averaging 60 mph. That's what Howerton was talking about; the fast, smooth course does give the flat trackers the advantage of riding, more or less, in theil\own environment. "This is the only track in the world where - if I ride my (bleep) off - I could win it," Mike Kidd told his friends. Everyone's gone home to search for a few more horses and set up their suspension for the demanding track. Now it's a question of who tunes the finest and who wakes up happy on December 1, raceday for The Superbikers. • 22. 24. 26 coo ITO KNEE & SHIN INSERTS COLORS AVAILABLE red, white & blue green, whIte & black MODUCTlIIIIC. blue. whIle & yellow IOOEASrSANCA_tOS/6V!NU£ black. while & vellow SAN CdLOJ.
