Pit Bike Motocross series exhibits fair share of mini exotica By E. Douglass FORT WORTH, TX, NOV. 3 The second annual Pit Bike Nationals Series is an annual affair held inside the Will Rogers Memorial Center on a dust free dirt track. Running all classes for all age groups, including an EJq>ert Pro money class, this'motocross is scored stadium style with elimination heats and main events. Maximum size engine displacement is 85cc. This series will run 10 weekends, ending Jan. 11, 1980. Awards will be given at the end of the series; the promoter along with Dave Stone of Dal-Ray Distributing and Bel· Ray Oil Products, will be awarding Bel-Ray Oil Products and monogrammed Class Champion jackets to each of the high point winners in their respective classes. Opening week of the series was well attended and even Mike Kidd and Terry Poovey, of Winston Pro Series fame, showed up to see what was happening. Riders here not only show skill in racing but also in building exotic minibikes. Donny Penwell has his Honda XR80.fixed up as a Bultaco (Bulonda) and Jeff Kring, a Can-Am dealer in Lewisville, TX, has remodeled his Honda XR into a CanAm. In the 65cc class, Phillip Dyson, Jr. (Suz) rode superbly to a win while, in her first time out, Chrissa Douglass (Yam) took second. Nineteen'year-old Brenda Pratt (Yam). who usually rides enduTOS, tried motocl'Olll for the first time and took the Powder Puff class win. Leading the 85cc Junior class, Jerry Moody, Bubba Thompson and David Barnhill gave it a go and at the finish the order was reversed. Barnhill took the win with Bubba second and Steve Thompson, who had a few problems earlier in the race, finally claimed third. At the drop of the flag, Donnie Strain, Mike Davis and Brad Crain were putting it all together in the 85cc Senior, literally, in the first tum. As they tangled, Davis' bike traveled about six feet further down the track minus a rider. Dodd Dyson (Suz) went on to take the win, Strain recovered for second and Scott Matherly (Yam) cleared the Illess for third. In two-stroke Intermediate action. Larry Crenshaw (Yam) and Mark Mosely (Yam) took the lead with Chester Czajkowski c!Jming up from behind. Larry Godwin (Yam) was down. then up. then running along side his bike to get it started. Meanwhile, in the first tum off-ramp, Godwin and Kirk Miller tangled. After all was said and done, Crenshaw pulled in for the win with Czajkowski second and Mosely third. John Phillips (Hon), Jeff Kring (Canonda)' and Jimmy Neil finished one-two-three in the 4-stroke Intermediate class after a real "blanket" race for the lead. The Over 30 class was another good nip 'n tuck affair with Ronnie Shields (Kaw), Donnie Penwell (Bulonda) and Richard Douglass (Yam) rounding out the first three positions. Kirk Spencer (Yam) took the lead in the Open Expert race while Kenny Tolbert (Yam) rode a great race but made a few mistakes that finally allowed Spencer to take the win. _. Result AUTOMAT1C: 1. Several passages, are laced with low-key humor and read well particularly his motorcyclist's eye view of crossing Texas in a blizzard. "And, on a second level. the volume has political implications beyond diversion. .. It is a part of the new wave of libertarian media which qu~tion the role of government as father rather than uncle. "Lipk.in adds to the genre, reaching ever further into the American subculture for evidence that the citizen, regardless of his stake in society. is repressed by ludicrous statute. "Yet is the idea of an Omega Squad, pledged to wipe out these cyclists through assassination, if need be - so farfetched? "I leav~ you to reread the history of . recent decades for that answer.
