E LightweIghts host 0.37 semI pro scrambles - 00 C'I M Q.l .0 By Maureen Lee 5 > PERRIS, CA, NOV, 3 The Lightweights M.C. gave District riders a treat by throwing a semi pro scrambles. Patille hot at ARM WIllow Springs RR By Ricardo .Mitchelli Photo by John Moore ROSAMOND, CA, NOV. 4 Chuck Parme clearly established himself as the man to beat by turning consistent 1: 35s in practice. hi the Open Four-Stroke . 28 . race, Parme took home a beautiful three foot trophy awarded by IBCO Gaskets after easily dispatching an underpowered Whit Blakeslee (Champion Kaw). In his second appearance of the day, Open Super Cafe, Parme got a chance to sample his mount for the upcoming four-hour endurance race at Sears Point. True to form. while riding the Racecrafters Kawasaki, normally ridden by Harry Klinzmann, Parme did one of his now infamous "catch me if you can" acts. John Glover, riding Dick Kilgroe's Kawasaki, definitely wanted to play the game as he managed to hook up an invisible tow line to Parme's rear fender for most of the race, with Panne taking the checkers a half tick ahead of Glover. Blakeslee finished a lonesome third . The 410cc Production race was truly the tightest match up of the day with Howard Monise, Rob Selvey and Ed Toomey bidding adios to the rest of the pack after only half a lap. On the second lap, Toomey got a little "behind" in the race as he gave Selvey a friendly pat on the butt while passing him on the outside through tum one. From that point on the lead changed at least every lap with Monise per· manently slotted third. Coming out of tum nine on the last lap, it appeared as if Toomey might hold on to win except that Selvey got a better drive out of the corner and took the flag ahead of Toomey and Monise to win, Mike McAvoy (Kaw) easily took the win over Dusty Behrman (Hon) in the 100cc GP after Greg Bush crashed hard in tum five bringing out the red flag. The Box Stock race saw the Cham· pion Kawasaki duo of Blakeslee and Shehon leading the Open and 750cc c1aues, n:spectively. Fortunately neither rider had to contend with any challengers. The 410cc Box Stock race was quite a different story as Conrad Brooks and Dave Behrendt had a race· long dice ending with Brooks the victor by a slim margin. In the Open Production race, Blakeslee's business panner and only challenger, Lee Fleming, dropped out on lap eight with a blol"n rear tire which nearly put the big man on his ear at blazing speed. The 750cc class was also dominated by two other members of the Champion stable, as Mike Spencer and Mark Shelton turned in excellent rides to gamer first and second place, with another 650 Kawasaki ridden by Mark Redmond holding down third. A small field of 250cc GP bikes were taught a lesson by Gennady Liubimski on his brand new TZ250 after early challenger Mike Baeder faded 14 seconds back to finish second. The 125cc Gfl saw early leader Eddie Lawson drop out on the fifth lap with veteran Jody Nicholas (Hon) inheriting the win, but only after numerous challenges by rookie Todd Brown's super clean Suzuki. Open GP ~ints leader Mike Baeder was unstoppable on his TZ750, leading wire to wire. Baeder came very close to lapping Dick Kilgroe (Kaw) and Brian Fenton (Suz) who grabbed second and third. It provided one of the nicest nights of racing we've had in a while; it was good to be back at Perris again, now under the ownership of Vince Landry who cut his racing teeth on it, and like everyone .else, we wish him the best of luck with his new enterprise. It's not every racer who can fulfill the dream of owning his own track. The Ascot starting team of AI Mintz and Shony Seaborne were on hand, trying to impress on the young to be professional on the starting line. Those who got anxious were immediately put. on the back row, because the evening runs against a curfew and time can't be wasted on controlling nervous riders, More than one name ended up being put back, including one of our favorite DistriCt 37 officers, Diane Connolly when she allowed the front wheel of her Buitaco to get too far forward. AI doesn't play favorites. Diane was riding in one of the two Senior classes, the under 250cc along with other District officials, Dee Granger and referee Dennis Rosenberg as. we start to see the District people starting to suppon our scrambles. Ralph Wilkinson won that class, .with Rosenberg taking second overall ... he was the guy on the sharp KTM whose Invaders desert colors turned fluorescent pink' everytime he rode under the lights. Connolly did OK for herself too; she was second going up the hill in the second round and the rest of the gang didn't get around her until they all arrived in tum one together and they decided to go deeper into it than she did. The second Senior class was a big one and a wild one with lots of talent in it. Mel Parkhurst shut the door on Bill Bartels in the first race and Bill fell on his Harley. Last moto Parkhurst feil off in tum one so it kinda made things even, but the Seniors are big boys, not little kids and take their lumps with laughter. Larry Bird won, he really steams on that new Triumph of his (1·2·2) with Rick Marquis second (2·3·3). Who beat Bird? Bartels, but two firsts and an 11th don't do it. .. shame on you, Parkhurst! Spectator turnout was nice too, and they were treated to a "Desert" class for desen and motocross riders who didn't have the equipment set·up for TTing. We have to admit they really looked a bit odd coming up to the line what with knobbies and the front ends high in the air. Keith Butterfield was our hero in that class; not only was he riding a splendiferous CCM which boomed in the air like a real motorcycle, he'd come in from each moto, leap off that bike and charge for his sidehack which was lined up ready to go in the next race. One guy had a beer can on his helmet (desert folk do those things) and we haven't seen a set of Checkers colors on the scrambles stan line since Moses was a pup (actually Terry Dorsch was the last one back in the '60s). The Pro class was impressive too and we love seeing our Pro flat trackers having fun on a scrambles . track. John Wincewicz won (1·1-3) but not without some stiff competition from Joe Steffen (2·4·1) and Mike Myers (4-3-4), along with riders like John Sperry, Terry Singleton, Dennis Briggs, Bobby Sanders and all, to make the class a real treat to watch. The holeshot Sperry got. on the stan of the last moto was a thing to behold; and Bob Sanders fell in tum one but the starting crew didn't buy his efforts to have the race red flagged so he could restan. The Brothers Cannon were running hot: Curtis alias Cannonball, won the Mini and the 125cc Amateur/Expen classes while Chris did it in the 250cc Amateur/Experts, Methinks they are well on the way to becoming another pair like the Brothers Scott (Gary and Hank) who also came out the Lightweights M.C. and the District 37 wars. The Lightweights are planning another of these races in February which really isn't that far away and if you missed this one, don't miss the next. The only thing you won't find next time out is the "consolation" race for money for those without Expert status. Ed Carroll son of let that one get run off this time but it won't happen again. Next time it will be a daytime race, Feb. 17, and will also have short track events. - Imponant: Trophies for this evening's racing will be given out Saturday night, Dec, 8 at Perris.
