gas and left on tim~. Howevc;r, th~
dama~ was don~ and h~ plac~d w~1I
down m his class.
Gas, loca~ n~ar th~ stan, was
intBeSting because th~r~ was a 20
minut~ rt5et which allow~ tim~ for
many riders to rest, work on bikes, talk
and, for at least Hannon and Munyon,
a change to dry, wann riding gear in
heat~ vans. What an uPJlf'r it must
hav~ been to head out for the second
loop dry and wann - even if it only
last~ a few miles. Th~ close proximity
of th~ campground with wann motor
homes and campers lu~ more than
one rider away from another 50 miles
oftonure.
This event, run professionally by the
R~ding Din
Riders, has been
difficult in the past. Last year it ~
IJKlIIt of the run and many riders
uskied" a large part of the course. Most
riders agreed that this year's run was
tougher and that the rain made them
more miserable than the snow of last
year. Out of 180 staners there were
only 41 finishers. Although differ~nt
s~ averages were provid~ for the
uC" class it made little difference because of the weather. There were no
finishers in the Open "C" class. There
were also no team trophies given as no
team turned in three score cards.
Tough enough?
Munyon, on a prototype 250cc
Honda, was originally thought to be
the winner, but Hannon protested that
one check was improperly marked. He
thought it was an observation check
only and rolled in early. He immediately asked where the flag was and,
upon fmishing, fil~ a protest. The
issue was resolv~ by the AMA the
next day. The check was thrown out
and Hannon was declared the winn~r.
The Buckhorn may have been the
last National enduro we will see in
District ~6 for awhile. The AMA, in its
infinite wisdom, has totally redesigned
the National Enduro schedule for 1980
and has left northern California completely out of the picture. In th~ past,
three Nationals have been run in
District ~6 - The Buckhorn, The
Crescent City Rattlesnake,
and
Eureka's Big Boot. These are well run
events that west coast riders look
forward to riding.
At this tim~ District ~6 officials and
enduro clubs are appealing this
decision in hopes of changing the
AMA's mind. District Enduro Steward
Dave Olson stated, "I am extremely
disappointed that no Nationals hav~
been sanctioned in District ~6 for 1980
and 1 hope the AMA will reconsider
and sanction at least one event in
District ~6."
The 1979 Buckhorn was another
well run event by the R~ding Din
Riders, who would like to thank the
Roseburg Lumber Company for the
generous use of th6r property. The
club also had the Oak Run Volunteer
Fire Dept. to cook up hot breakfast
and lunch, not to mention a large
bonfire which was a real lifesaver for
many of us. Thanks also go out to the
people of Mercy Life Suppon who
suppli~ a llnit free of charge. This
club is really involv~ in the community and it shows. The ·ev~nt next year is
plann~ to be gear~ more to tbe B
and Criders.
