Class 50 had 14 finishers out of its I!> entries, and the last one to finish; with a time of 41 hours, was Iron Horse Gresham entry of Stephen and Terry Doane. Their effort was hindered from the start when help they were expecting didn't show. So while one was on the bike, the other had to drixe the van to the next meeting spot. Terry got on the bike at EI Crucero, and Steve drove to San Ignacio, but fell asleep there, and Terry missed him. Steve went back to look for Terry, while Terry went on down the course. They continued missing each other:, with Terry eventually getting off the bike at Ciudad Constitucion for some sleep, finishing the race later while Steve, hearing that he was at Constitucion, drove out there only to miss connections again. Pfeiffer brought the Class 20winning Husky across the line about seven o'clock in the moming' for an elapsed time of 2!>:!>8:38.62. The team had had their troubles, ranging from a shredded pipe before El Crucero to a broken keyway on the mag at the fISh camp. Still, they were over fOUT hours ahead of s«ond place. Second went to the Leckich/Lockhart Yamaha, after they received some help from Kent Pfeiffer, who did some riding for them after Leckich hurt his leg. Atchison and Kelly recovered from the ignition change to finish 44 minutes later. The first Class 58 finisher was the Gilliland/Prather Husky, taking 26:06:01.71 to complete the 98!> miles. Second place was captured by the team of Lee Midgley and Paul Sorenson on a Rainbow Wallets Husky, despite Midgley incurring a broken foot. The Doug Douglas Motorcycles KTM of Doug Douglas and Whitey Gregory placed third. The first four-wheel vehicle placed s«ond overall with a time 30 minutes slower than the winning bike. It was not one of the unlimited single--seat buggies, but rather a big two-wheeldrive Dodge pickup driven by Walker Evans. • Results CLASS 22 lOVER 251ccl: 1.
