NOV. 12 The Bureau of Land Management has revised their two temporary land cIosura _ , described in last week's Cycle News, making It possible for individuals and groups of less than 50 riders to complete a trailrlde from near Barstow, CA to the CalifomialNevada state line on Thanksgiving weekend. Completion of a Berstow to Las Vegas trip is easily accomplished once off California soil. The decision made by BLM State Director James Ruch and Riverside, District Manager Gerald Hillier came following two meetings held Nov. 8 at BLM offices in Secramento. At 11 a.m. that morning. a meeting attended by motorcycling enthusiasts Louis McKey and Albert FoIs from the Phantom Duck of the Desert group, Mark Anderson of the Motorcycle Industry CouncH and CJde News Managing Editor Charles Morey, produced the suggestion of exempting the powerline road lsee mapl from tha closure areas. No harm, It was agreed by motorcycrlstS and BLM rapresentatlves alike, could be done to the environment if riders stayed on the road. The suggestion came from AI Fols of PDOD, Inc. • . The motorcyclist rapresentatives left the two and one-half hour meeting at 1:30 p.m. aware that a 2 p.m. meeting among the BLM and conservationist representatives could threaten what seemed a fair compromise. Apparently, however, they found the plan acceptable, and on Friday, Nov. 9, BLM issued a revised temporary closure map. As described in a letter from Mr. Hillier: "Through input by AMA. District "S1, conservation groups and many others, I believe wa have arrived at a solution which carries out BLM's obligation to manage the public lands for 811 of the people of the United States, edequately protects resource velues, meets the legitimate desire of the offroading public and avoids a confrontation which would benefit no one. While a route is open between Vermo and Neveda, an event as such does not exist. Persons who desire to use the area will be expected to observe the closure as modified and to act in a responsible manner. They shoukl also respect the fact that there is private property in the area as well as important facilitias which serve metropolitan Los Angeles. "1 wish too, to emphasize that BLM has permitted desert events for those who desire to enter competition. Besides a race in the Las Vegas District. an event is planned in the California Desert by the Imperial Valley M.C. on Sunday, November 25th." Motorcyclists who may plan to ride in the Vermo lBerstowlarea will not be turned away by U.S. DeputY Marshals, as previously suggested in last week's BLM press rele.... Riders should remain aware. however, that the two closed areas, as shown on the revised map, are considered by BLM to be environmentally sensitive. Campers should refrain from playriding in the area, and as atways. campsite clean-up is a must. Trail riders will be in the spotlight. and if the area' Is left in damaged or littered condition, our representatives may be assured of increased difficulty in future negotiations over land use issues.
