Desert Hotl- Rick Finger (pictured) teamed with Larry Roeseler for the 0-38 Benefit race win. (Inset! H.J. Rinerd earned a lofty second 125cc overall. Roeseler and Finger team up for 'D·38 Benefit race • win By Falisa Pipkin SUPERSTITION MTN., CA, ocr. 21 Husky mounted Larry Roeseler and Rick Finger notched the overall win in D-3S's Sports Committee Benefit Team Race laid over a seven mile loop, c,onsisting of rocky but swift terrain. The Roeseler/ Finger team led all but one lOOp of the hour long race, ,averaging nine minutes per circuit. . The team of Randy Hollenbeck and Chip Howell, also Husky mounted, managed to stay right on the leaders despite heavy traffic from lapped riders and a thick cover of dust. At one time, Finger came in about two minutes off the pace, handed the big Husky over to Roeseler, and the offroad specialist proceeded to smoke through the next seven miles in seven minutes. Both teams pitted on the next round. Hollenbeck tore out of the pit area ahead of Finger but Finger caught up to him on the big hill and passed him on the ride up and over. Although Hollenbeck made a gallant try, he couldn't catch up to Finger before the checkered flag" Ric Secor and Paul Eddy slid in for a third overall on their 250cc Yamaha. In the Open/25Occ race Chip Howell took .the overall win after some hot racing with Roeseler in the early part of the race. Challenged by Randy Hollenbeck, 250cc riders Paul Eddy and Rick Finger took some unscheduled rolls in the- din. Eddy tangled with Hollenbeck on the flTSt loop, but both came out clean. Finger met his match near the end of the .line, in the sandwash, when Eddy passed him up. Lady Luck was tripping out everyone in this race. Roeseler had whiskered a plug for the second time and stopped to clean it when Paul Eddy- limped in, out of gas. Roeseler gave him some gas and Finger, of course, trucked on by. Howell had no problems and put his fine motocross expertise to good use on the short course. He took the win followed by Livingston and Hollenbeck in the Open class. Finger was next in for fourth overall and the 250cc class win with Eddy right behind him. Craig Corda and Dale Stevenson had their own race going. Both had been right on Roeseler during the first loop, Corda just a hair ahead of Stevenson. Both finished with one spot between them, sixth and eighth overall, nine spots ahead of the next finish· erin their class. Don Mathews again took the overall win in the 125cc and Senior division, but not without a challenge from H.J. Rinard who was ahead of Don on the first loop. Senior Amateur rider Jack Neeley was right behind the pair. Mathews moved into the lead by the second go round and Rinard had to settle for second overall. Neeley stayed right in there finishing third overall and first in the Senior division. Results TEAM RACE: 1. Larry _erfRi\:k Rnger tHus): 2. Randy Hollenbeck/Chip Howelt (Husl; 3. Secor/Eddy dust off Dirt Riders team race By loretta Pipkin PLASTER CITY, CA, NOV. 4 Ric Secor and Paul Eddy combined efforts to take control of the Din Riders M.C. Team Race held on a 17 mile loop where all teams battled it out for three hours. Secor and Eddy both ride Yamahas; Secor is sponsored by San Diego Yamaha and Eddy by Kearney Mesa Yamaha. An extended time limit and the use of two bikes were definite advantages in this race. The Charles Welk/Jim Nichols team led the first four loops but lost time gassing and changing riders which blew their early cushion. The same happened with Bob Mortonl Craig Corda and Roger Adsit/Jim Ribley gave them no mercy when Cordas' machine broke a foot peg. Corda had it spot welded on the next go round only to have it break again, forcing the team to use the one remaining bike for the last hour. Secor and Eddy,. performing flawlessly on their 250s, were moving up. By the fifth lap they had the lead with Adsit/Ribley in second. Secor was out riding the eighth lap when Eddy took out of the pits waving off the checks. He had been told Secor had seized at the third check. The machine turned out not to be Secor and Eddy barely made it back in time to take over his round. Randy Hollenbeck and Claude Maynard were right in the pack on Adist/Ribley, Corda/Morton when Hollenbeck was stopped by a flat. He and Maynard finished the race but the downtime cost them a lap. Adist/Ribley hung in there for second with Morton/Corda third. Fourth was Welk/Nichols, and the Leon/Dale Livingston team was fifth. Don Mathews/Matt Hope squeezed their 125cc in among the Open bikes for sixth and Scott King/Robert Larson fmished seventh. These seven teams were the only ones to finish 10 laps. The Dirt Riders did an excellent job of laying out and marking the course. We welcome Fudpucker as the new president of D-S8 Spons Committee and bid a fond farewell to our past president, Jay Ahrens, and his family who have done a great job for the past three years. Jay has been an iron man, both firm and fair, always keeping his smile and sense of humor. It reflected the support he received from family, friends and club members. He plans to remain a supporter but wants to kick back and maybe do more riding himself. .... 31
