£gli returns at
R.A.C.£. OCIR MX
By Tom Corley
IRVINE, CA, OCT. 18
Everyone is really pitching in to
make the R.A.C.E. motocross
program at'OCIR a good event
for the riders to go to. The local
shops and dealers are especially
involved and their help is really appreciated. Tonight Yamaha of Buena
Park threw in their nickel and they
gave away several gift certificates to
some of the winning riders.
.
Since the start of this new program I
'have seen some old faces who have not
been out to the races in a few years.
One of these happens to be Stu Egli of
the 500cc Pros. Stu has been getting
back into it after stopping in 1975 and
tonight he had to face just one other
rider in the class, Mike Lillevig. Egli
won with two first place wins over
Mike and both of those two really had
to struggle against the rest of the
traffic which was made up by the 125
.and 250cc Pro riders. Chris Morey
(Suz) beat last week's 125cc- Pro
winner, Doug Dubach (Yam). Keith
Williamson was third over Todd
Peterson who pulled off of the track in
the first moto. Huff Hadley (Mai) is
·continuing his sensational winning
streak in the 250cc Pro cash and needs
some good, fast competition. Gary
Jones (Amx) gave it his best to whip
Huff but found it difficult and ended
up second over Tim Salter (Yam),
Dave Douglas (Kaw) and Todd
Simmons.

Zitterkopf went down and gave the
lead back to Benavidez, who by that
time was having a hard time holding
off Miller, The two of them raced until
the last few laps when Miller jammed
his Suzuki on' the inside of Benavidez
a'nd took the lead. Benavidez stalled
out in that turn, but was able to hold
down third place going across the line
behind Dave Fernandez (Yam), In the
second round both Miller and
Benavidez got poor starts while
Zitterkopf wheelied away with the
lead. By the end of the moto, Miller
had worked his way up to second and
Benavidez was third which made the
overall results read Miller, Benavidez
and Zitterkopf.
Ted Hoyt was the top man in the
Open Pro class. He took the first moto
after passing early leader Fred
Conover (Suz), but had to settle for
second the next time up. Randy
Blevins (Yam) went 3-1 to nab second
place over Conover, John Saggay (Mai)
and Jerry Costa (Hus).

CRC co-hosts
Corona stadium
qualifier
The California Racing Club cohosted the R.A.C.E. motocross
at Corona last Friday night in
order to give Riverside County
riders a shot at qualifying for the
Western Amateur Championship at
Anaheim Stadium. While CRC and
RACE may have been cooperating
with each other, the weather wasn't
cooperating with anyone and it rained
all night long.
But that didn't stop Craig Dale of
Anaheim Husky from claiming yet
another win in the 125cc Pro class. He
shot out of the hole behind a couple of
riders but secured the lead in half a
lap. From there on in the race was a
little on the boring side with Dale just
waltzing away with the lead. Andy
Northrup (Suz) was second over Rick
Jackson (Suz).
In the next round it was the same
story, Dale took the lead early and
once again took it all the way. Second
place again went to Northrup but this
time third went to Tibbs McCullough
(Suz) over Jackson .and Troy Lee.
McCullough was sixth in race one and
that dropp'ed him to fourth in the final
standings. '
While Dale has been destroying the
125cc class every week, Redlands
Suzuki's Marty Miller has been doing
almost the same thing to the 250s. Last
week, Juan Benavidez and his Can-Am
gave Miller a second place and this
week it was another close one.
Benavidez got the holeshot but was
passed by Greg Zitterkopf in the

Gauvin takes lead
in CRC/Yamaha
enduro series
By DeVore Fortney
LUCERNE VALLEY, CA, OCT. 14
Round two of the California Racing Club/Yamaha series moved
down to the Lucerne area for the
aptly-named Gullywhomper Enduro. The reason this name fits so well
is because of the seemingly endless
sections of "body-building" whoops
used in past CRC races such as the
100,mile Hobo earlier this year. This
race though, by' moving the pits from
Soggy up to Anderson dry lake,
managed to avoid most of these roller·
coaster sections. It also managed to
avoid any real "special-test" sections as
}Vas attested to by the 16 riders who
managed to zero the course. With only
seconds
making
the
difference
between first and 16th and quite often
only luck and the whim of a checker
deciding those seconds, there were
actually 16 winners. But since there
must be an overall winner, Warren
Stirling was well deserving by riding a
perfect race - not one second lost! In
second and leading the "younger guys"
was Bob Keirns losing 10 seconds,
closely followed by Jeff Hunter.
Leading the 250s was the ever-present
Randy Liebig down .21.
Rounding out the sweep by the
"older guys" Jim Edmundson, Open
+ 35, embarrassed a lot of A and B
riders by losing only 25 seconds. Heck
of a ride JimJ
.
The only person repeating his win of
last month and thus getting closer to a
new bike was 250cc B rider Randy
Gauvin. A couple of good rides but
isn't it about time this man was
advanced to A status? Could change
things quite a bit. Other B winners
were Geno Linello, tak.ing the Open
class and Phil Erikson and Bernd
Hartenstein leading the 250cc and
Open + 35 classes, respectively. On
the other end of the spectrum (or
should I say generation?) was Jim Loyd
beating the under· L6 crowd..
Among the one loopers were some
familiar names leading the way. Tied
with a perfect score were Debbie
Owens (200 W A) and Jerry RUS5ell (80
C). Behind by only a second was Kathy
Herndon, first woman B rider. King of
the minis Larry Steffan took. his usual
