Naturally, with a high-point trial, there were a few wide-eyed incidents, but the only real calamity was suffered by the Novice who landed in the Yucca bush. Scott Head, eighth in the nation this year, indulged in surname charades early on. He landed on his head. His execution was faultless. Riding off a tree root into the crcekbed somehow kicked his rear wheel up. He found himself doing a front wheel wheelie for about 20 feet before going over the ban. Then his throttle jammed open, but the shift pedal "luckily" gouged into his leg and knocked the pilotless bike into neutral, aborting its attempt to become the Bul That Levelled Palmdale. Disaster trailed another V.O.T.E. rider, Dean Balter. F1J'5t, his bike decided to stay put atop a log. Unfortunately, Dean kept going - a oneand-a-half tuck-and-roll into the creek. Later a vitamin fortified rock leaped up and wedged between his rear wheel and fender. This instantl'i stopped forward progress and all semblance of poise as Baker again sampled the soil. As the scores indicate, competition chairtnan Andre Plouffe came up with a real cruncher, the kind of a trial that had some complaining about severity while the Young Turk National riden gave it four-stan and begged for more abuse. Some of these rabid mud-andgutsen will no doubt be more pumped than ever to learn that next year's national title will be up for grabs. Marland Whaley, winner of four of the last five U.S. Championships, will not be defending his crown. Instead he will base' in England to contest the world championship schedule. Now all the young comen have to do is figure out how to beat three-time Champion Lane Leavitt. Bernie, whose appearance in a riding belt may start a new trend, commented on the difficulty factor after the trial as he tried to differentiate between European and American section philsophies. He point out that Littlerock, liIr.e many American Nationals, was teeming with "tricky five" type sections. He feels that many American sections tend to be quite easy for the most part except for one or more do-or-die spots where the rider either puts everything together to clean an obstacle or else he stops. He mentioned that European sections tend toward being dabgrabbers, more consistently hard throughout but with fewer "impossible" spots. But Bernie also recognized that terrain availability as well as section philosophy has a lot to do with these differences . Six hours after it began, the Trick or Treat ended as the standard time sun prematurely sunk behind the mountains and the score table jack-olanterns flickered and grinned their final grins. The trap troops packed up and headed home. Some of them had ridden with the world's best. In another six weeks they can return for a rematch at the Experts Only Trial.
