there, Steve Van Duzen got by and wrote the scri pt for the rest of the race. The smooth, twisty course favored motocross skills and Steve took full advantage of his experience to bag the race from lap one to the finish. Whoe...er said that youth was wasted on the young should have seen the next race. The Old Fogies (excuse me, that should read "Seniors and Veterans") doddered off at nine a.m. and proceeded to act as though they were overdosed on Geritol. As in certain .other human endeavors, experience can replace'hormones but racing uses both. Since I had the dubious honor of seeing this race from the inside, my viewpOint was plus and minus 50 yards of my own position and that was certainly nowhere near the leaders. The leader from start to finish, according to my helpers, was Joe Price. He was not without challenge, however. Bob Hays was tight after Price for the JfiTSt two laps and then passed the baton to Al Stinebaugh who worked on Price for a few laps until Dudley Duncan took up the banner and moved up to second. His move was too late to 'catch Price and Duncan took second ahead of Stinebaugh and Hays. At this writing, the results of the upto-200cc Beginner and Novice Glasses were not clear and all I can report is that Craig Edwards and Mark Maynor were early leaders. CRC has been making a determined effort to include ATCs and Odysseys in whatever events will accommodate their particular cl:laracteristics. They had their own event on the same course that the bikes ran and did quite well, thank you. Mike Lekich led the Odysseys all the way but not with_out a battle from Fred Wing. Their contest was furious enough to carry them far from any other challenge. The word around the CRC pits was that Mike is paralyzed from ttie waist down as the result of a desert motorcycle accident but would not give up racing. He has to be helped in and out of that Odyssey but there is no doubt to his courage or racing ability. Reggie Dunlap parlayed a really great start in the ATC race to handily win that event. Reggie caused me a little consternation since he was wearing a Team Husqvar~a shirt with the name Roeseler on the back. At least, I think it was Reggie. . . • Results MINI DESERT: 1. Maico's undisputed domination of big bore motocross continued for yet another year. Eric McKenna rode his Maico to wins in both Open motos, Maico-mounted Alan King was second overall followed by another Maico rider-Glen Taylor. The sweep was further evidence that year after year nobody builds big bikes like Maico. One. Two. Three Enduro Wins. Three National triumphs topped off with a perfect score in the Prairie Dawgs 105 mile National Enduro at Chippeway, New Mexico. This was the year Don Sanford switched to the Maico Magnum Enduro. It was a big yearfor Don and Maico. Keep that in mind when the new Maico arrive at your Maico dealer. They're worth whatever you have to do to get one. MAlec: 1256 Progress Rd.. Suffolk.
