II • • • ~ t LarryWosick blew away the competition to win both m9tos in the finals of the Thms-USA MX National Support Series. Riding his Kawasaki Uni-1fak~ he electrified the Sears Point crowd with a dazzling display of strength and endurance. Larry Wosick...a strong contender for next year's series. And another reminder that if you ain't got the greens you're gonna get the blues. ~ l' ~ ,....; l' ~ Q,) ..c e Q,) > 0 z Honda's Rick Munyon took second overall. he lost his front brake, then a rock kicked back by another rider put a dent in his fork tube. They compressed like a street bike and that's the way he finished the enduro. Oh, yeah - he lost the rear brakes tool His penalty was seven; not bad considering. He was third overall. Meanwhile, Team Suzuki's Drew Smith was flying. He said later that the terrain, the scenery, the flora and .the fauna, were a real upper. He managed to zero all the checks but that nasty third section. He lost his one point there. His PE 250 is a prototype 1980 model and does it look good. Gus Blakely, Smith's mechanic, felt pretty good too. This was his first time out as Drew's mechanic. Remember Charlie Bethards? Rides a Bultaco as an A rider? Well, he did it again as a non·factory rider. Scored a 12. Charlie is always in there. This time, he had two other Bethards riding on his minute Kevin in the B class and Kelly, also in the B class. The Bethards are from Auburn, WA. Dan Stanley had one of the better scores from the hosting club. He managed a 27. Mike Godfrey, on a Wheelsmith Maieo, picked up a nine in the 250cc A class. Mike ran the area for the first time ever and commented that he thought the club did a fine job overall. At an area past checkpoint eight, coming out of a wet and wooded section, the riders had to travel a short length of blacktop. This in itself was nothing unusual, except the blacktop had been freshly oiled. By the time a dozen riders had made the turn and laid down a layer of mud, it became interesting. More than a few made the turn, wicked it on, and promptly did a 360·, much to their surprise and embarrassment. Most had a wide grin fixed to their mouths when picking themselves and their bikes back up. Meanwhile, the photographer was having a field day. Again and finally, the Mount Baker M.C. is to be commended. Fred Boettner was his helpful self to all involved: Even to the point of telling Sanford his rear axle. bolts were loose as he was sitting on the starting grid. They weren't. Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Duronso worked very ha rd on this National. Lyle spent much time over and above the event itself with the Forestry people. They were happy they should have been. This club understands. For such an up in·the·corner, ou[· of-the way place, the Cowbell National Enduro is marked to become a classic. This event only put it a notch higher on the peg. • Kawasaki Heh, heh, heh. i~'1 N~~~~t. I I I..
