OCT. 26 Shawn Moran led the points race scoring an impressive 675 to earn the top.spot in the upcoming long track championships that will take place on the half-mile track at Ascot on November 9. The qualifying round saw 32 of the top Ascot speedway riders compete in an elimination·type 18 program with only two riders from each of the first eight events moving up to the second round of four events. The riders who finished third and fourth in the first eight events also had a second round of four events. but there was no moving up for them. The most points that could be earned in their group was 150 points for first. 125, for second, 100 for third and 100 for fourth. Round two for the winners paid no points, but again cut their numbers in half. Because their third and fourth place riders had survived the earlier rou nd. t hei r two events pa id more points than round two did - 250 for first. 225 for second. 200 for third and 175 for fOluth. If. by now. you are not totally confused. look at the guys who have been coming in first and second and not yet earning any points at all! What really has happened up to this point of the show is easy - we started with ~2 riders in eight events. First and second are winners and third and fourth are losers. but still get a chance to earn points in the two loser events. The 16 riders raced in four events and again only the top two moved on from each race. The eight losers got one more ride for points. The top eight riders were then in a semi-final. There were two semi-final races. each with four riders. Again the top two in each race went to the final and the third and fourth went to the consolation. Th~ two final events are where the big points are given out. Moran. by winning the final. received 675 points. Se<;ond place Mike Bast got 625 points. All this work was to earn one of 14 spots for the long track championship. There will be 16 riders competing, with Bob Schwartz and Bruce Penhall taking the last two spots for the event on Nov. 9. • Results ,. Shawn Moran 16751: 2. Mike Bast 16251: 3. Dave Sims 15751: 4.
