Steve Liedberg experienced an at· tack of mechanical ills just after he'd rolled away with the holeshot in the Mini Expert class and "Boomin'" Brent Smith jetted into the star spot. Wayne Liedberg frantically wrenched on Steve's bike and got it back together for a second moto run. Liedberg didn't waste a minute as he leaped into the lead and left the pack in his dust. Sm.ith found himself hampered by a bad start, but he'd gained second 'tf..th some grade A maneuvers by the time the ch ekers stopped the charge. Mabton Dunes hosts Pat Jacobson benefit By The Squisher MABTON, WA, SEPT. 30 Two hundred and twenty riders from all over Washington were on hand at Mabton Dunes today GUARANTEED A MUST FOR ALL ENDURO, HARE SCRAMBLE, M-X AND CROSS-COUNTRY RACERS FOR THE ULTIMATE IN PROTECTION to race and help raise money for injured National motocross rider Pat Jacobson. Five foot high trophies were awarded to the first Amateur in each claSi with positions two-l0 receiving inscribed beer mugs. Eighteen motor· cycle shops. clubs, and concerned people contributed $100 each to pay for the trophies. The track rental, P.A. system, and watering were also donated so that more money could go to the benefit of which it was intended. It was estimated that over $2000 was raised for Pat to help defray medical costs. The track was in excellent condition with the long rough uphill beinl!'. l.!~d for this final rac~ of the seaso;' Phil Lar~(!r. (Kaw) rode both 125 and 250cc Pro classes today and proved to be a master of the rough sand track on his first visit. Phil grabbed the holeshot in the first 250cc mota with Eric Eaton (Mai). Stacey Thornton, (Kaw). Dennis Ostriem (Han), and Ron Pomeroy (LOP Yam) in tow. Thornton was using a paddle tire today which really threw some sand on the riders unfortunate enough to be following him. Pomeroy spent most of the mota trying to find a way around Eaton and by then Larson was long gone. Dave LaPierre (Kaw) passed Eaton for third with two laps to go. Eaton didn't realize the short amount of time remaining as he closed near the finish but he wasn't able to repass. Pomeroy slowed on the last lap letting LaPierre slip into second. Phil Larson's Kawasaki gave everyone the blues again in the second mota as he led from start to finish. Ron Pomeroy quickly moved up to second but couldn't reel in Phil. Stacey Thornton ran strong throughout the whole mota to take third ahead of LaPierre and Robb Manning (Suz). Brian Bowers (Han) won both motos of the 250cc B class despite strong competition from John Fagen (Yam) in the fITSt moto and Scott Seyler (Han) in the second. Fagen passed Bowers for the lead with one lap to go in the first moto only to have his bike quit. Scott Seyler moved into the lead on the first lap of the second moto but crashed when his grips came off on the rough straight. Jack McGill (Yam) proved once again that no one in the northwest can come close to him on a minibike. He won both motos by huge margins over Steve Oster (Suz) and Marvin Waldo (Yam). • Over 25 U.S. ISDT riders chose the Hi·Point "Dirt Defender" for their ISDT cycles.
