Rumors also have it that Suzuki has signed Frenchman Jean-' Jacquas Bruno to compete in the 500cc class with Gerard Rond. He's the Sierra Club guy who serves California Governor Jerry Brown as Resources Secretary and was the one who persuaded Governor Brown to veto AB 1407, the Sagebrush Rebellion bill, after it had passed both houses of the State Lagislature without a single dissenting vote. Well Cyde News received a copy \of a letter Johnson wrote to Secretary ot the Intarior Cecil Andrus. The letter urged Andrus to adopt more restrictive policies on ORV use on public lands, and suggested that the Department of the Interior might wish to copy California's OHV Act and provide a few controlled sites • I, Half mile Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha have contributed to a pool, which will be maintained by the AMA, that will be used to pay a purse of $$,000 at AMA Regional Championship MX Series race meets in 1980. Since 1980 sanction package and purse requirements are $4,888, payment of the purse by the manufacturers will reduce the cost to only $1,888 for promoters hosting Regionals. The AMA is requiring each Regional promoter to include the four manufacturers' names in all advertising, make PA announcements concerning the manufacturers during the meets, place banners provided by the manufacturers around the track, and use pennants provided by the manufacturers to outline the course. In a letter from Mike DiPrete, Commissioner of Professional Racing, sent to AMA promoters, DiPrete says the AMA has "set a target of 10 Regional Championship MX meets for each of our three Regions: Eastern, Central and Western." for OHV use. Johnson sent carbon copies of the letter to the environmental thugs at th, Council on Environmental Quality (they hired David Sheridan to do a report on ORV use), George Bernes (a member of the Sierra Club's ORV task force) well-known anti-QRV environmentalist Howard Wilshire, Rupert Cutler (the father of RARE III and Russell Cahill 'head of the California Parks' & Rec department!. Yes Virginia, Mr. Johnson is a public servant, if your definition of "public" is limited to the Sierra Club ... Next year's AMA National Enduro Championship Series has been cut to 12 eventa (from 24 in 19791 in an apparent effort to streamline the series, encourage more rider par· ticipation and place more emphasis on local eventa. Energy conservation and land use problems were given as the basis for the decision. However, counting a competitor's 10 best rides (of 12) in 1980 as opposed to 13 (of 24) this year, appears to place Increased emphasis on travel rather than restricting it. Letters to Governor Brown about this incident and the mistake he made in The ISDT Qualifier Series for 1980 has grown to seven events with the addition of Tulsa, OK, to the sites used this year. The rocky terrain in Oklahoma should give riders a fust hand glimpse of what to expect in the ISDT in France. In addition, the Trask Mountain (Oregon) Qualifier will be a three day event. Complete Enduro and lSDT Qualifier Series schedules next week. Jay Springsteen, who saw his three year reign as AMA Grand National Champion come to B halt this season, is "feeling fine. I went into the hospital in Rint (Michiganl after the San Jose National for mora tests on my stomach problem," said Springsteen in a call from his Lapeer, MI. home. "Basically, the doctors said that nerves were the cause of my problems. It's been a long year and I'm glad it's over although it didn't exactly turn out the way I planned. I just bought a couple of new rifles and I'm spending my time hunting ducks and doing a little fishing right now:' continued Springsteen. "Deer season opens Nov. 15 and you can bet I'll be out in the woods. In fact. I've got it figured ttl where I can hunt until 11 a.m. on the 17th and then fly out to California for the AMA awards banquet (Nov. 18) and be back in the woods by the afternoon of the 19th. That's what life is all about. taking it easy and doing what you enjoy doing. I feel good enough to start the 1980 season right now:' Two World Champions head the entry list for the Dec. 1 "Superbikers" event at Carlsbad Raceway. The Superbikers' event will pit top road racers, dirt trackers and motocrossers in one race over a course composed equally of road race, din track and motoc1'OlS sections.
