In the exciting :rop Fuel Elimin~tor Class, Kenny Annesley's "Orange Crush", twin-engine Kawasaki, built by Carl Ahlfeldt and sponsored by Motorcycles Unlimited and M.T.C. Engineering, won his semi-final run turning in a 7.78 over Roy "Frog" Thacker on a single engine. blown Kawasaki, sponsored by Lynchburg Kawasaki. Thacker turned in a 7.83 for a very close semi-final. In the other Top Fuel ~mi·Final, Marion Owens from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, sponsored by Harley·Davidson, dialed a 8.36 defeating Joe Thronson. Thronson turned in an 8.97 E.T. for a close finish. The top Fuel Eliminator Final . matched Kenny AnnesIey against Marion Owens. Annesley won decisively, turning in a 7.75 E.T. . 178.92 mph over Owen's 8.35·148.27 mph. A double engine Kawasaki, winning out over a formidable double engine Harley·Davidson competitor. The Pro Stock category offered the most exciting semi·finals and finals anywhere. ever. This was the frrst time in IDBA history that there were 37 pro stockers trying to make a field of 16 quarter finalists. The Pro Stock Class, dominated by Terry Vance the last three years, is gaining. more and more competition annually. Vance came to Gulfport to defend his Number One plate. Terry. the only factory· backed Pro Stock racer in the IDBA is sponsored by R.C. Engineering and U.S. Suzuki. He was the number one qualifier at this meet with a 9.09 e.t. Sid Pogue, sponsored by Pogue Machine Works and M.C. Engineering. waS the number two qualifier at this meet with a 9.25 e.!. qualifying time. Vicki Farr, sponsored by Farr Cycles. was the number three qualifier at the meet with a 9.29 e.!. Butch Pace. sponsored by Pace Kawasaki, was the number four ~ualifier with a 9.33 e.!. qualifying tIme. This brought the top four Pro Stockers into the semi·finals, all four riders qualifying within one-fourth second of each other. The pressure mounted on all the riders as the first semi·final was set to run. The crowd of people inched as close to the two asphalt strips as they could get. in an effort to get a better view. In the first semi·final, Terry Vance was matched against Vicki Farr. Both riders prepared for the run doing burn outs in back of the staging area, each trying to intimidate the other. One would expeCt Vance to run very strong in an effort to meet the winner in the other semi·final run, but Vicki Farr had ideas all her own about what was going to happen. The lights staged down to the green. and Farr was out of the hole like a rocket on her big Kawasaki. Vance was clearly defeated out of the staging area. He shut down his big Suzuki two·thirds of the way down, and turned an 11.20 E.T. at 91.27 mph. The crowd came three feet off the ground to see Vicki Farr turn in her e.t. of 9.45 at 137.19 mph to gain a berth into the final. No one expected an independent to defeat a proven factory· backed champion, and they responded to Vicki's run appropriately . In the other semi·final, Sid Pogue appeared ready to do what ever was necessary to protect his 1979 points lead. He turned a 9.09 e.t. at 144.00 mph flat to edge out a very tough Butch Pace who turned in a 9.47 e.!. . at 141.05 mph. In the final, Pogue obviously knew what Vicki Fan' had just accomplished in her semi-final, and he turned in a boiling 9.05 e.t. at 144.69 mph. Farr was off her normal run in the final. losing to Pogue. turning in a 9.58 e.t. at 138.24 mph. • E ,~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~-, I \ • II ,i II!! 0 0 I~ 8 8: 8~ I ~ 8 1:1 I 0 8 8 "For the utmost o 8 o In reliability and proven performanee, I rely on o I CAl D.I.D chain"... ! sCtllV,eECklUnd DAIDO/D.I.D motorcycle chain: UMd by more 8 top I'lICing c:ompetItDra then any oilier chIIIn. r , _ ~ ~ 0 0 CORPORATION LincoItlwood.
