Andy Tudor crashed his way to second in the 250ec Pro bash at Mabton.
framed Honda four·valver in his first
moto; and Conrad Stitser could only
bring his brand new 420 KTM in for
second place first moto, then lost a coil
wire to DNF moto two just after
forging into the lead.
Terry HaIl brought his Husky down
from Idaho to score a 3-3 for second
overall and Carson City's Jeff
Cunningham (Yam) ran 5-2 for third.
Another Idahoan, Joe Scott (Mon)
filied in fourth spot.
As no 250cc Experts signed up, the
U5cc Experts shared the Open Expert
moto after a 20 second delayed start.
Steve Montague (Suz) aced the first
moto, got a slow start the second
moto, passed leader Jason Hawks (Suz)
about midway, then seized to DNF.
Hawks' 2-1 was good for first overaIl.
Dave Personette (Suz) ran second
overall and Bill Buttram (Suz)
rounded out the Suzuki sweep of this
class with third overall.
A small Open Intermediate field of
six riders put on a show of hand to
hand combat throughout both their
motos. First session, Jerry Canonic
(Mai) took the lead closely pursued by
Brian Butler (Yam) who soon bobbled
in the sand on the back of the course.
Dan Lawson (Mai) moved into second
but was repassed by Butler who soon
dumped on the sidehill tum. Lawson
then made his drive to nip Canonic for
fU'Sl. Chester Martinmaas chugged his
Suzuki 370 four-stroke into third.
The fired up bunch fouled the start
of the second round. The restart saw
Canonic with the early lead but this
time Butler kept upright long enough
to push into first about halfway along.
Canonic kept second and Lawson
third and the overalls came out
Canonic (2-2)' first, Lawson (1-3)
second, and Butler (4-1) third.
In Open Novice, Russell Wyant
(Mai) led wire to wire fmt moto but
there was a whole bunch of position
swapping going on behind. David
Mattas (Hus) finaIly slipped into
second with Jim Willaman (Mai)
third. Their second moto was a more
orderly parade with Rooney Maynick
(Yam) first, Mattas second, and Dan
Hensley (KTM) third. Overalls came
out Mattas (2-2), Maynick (4-1),
Wyant (1-5), and Hensley (6-3).
Adding a bit of interest to the Open
Novice class was the entry of Peter
Hess from Switzerland. Hess was
passing through Winnemucca on a
cross-country tour when he spotted the
race and asked if he could enter. (Hess
spoke no English so the Flying W's,
ready for anything, broke out their
German interpreter:) Why not? From
the back of his van, Hess took a stock
DT 400, complete with lights, instru·
ments, and all. He turned a
respectable practice lap, considering
his mount, but two laps of the first
moto was all Hess could handle before
the desert heat got to him.
The other Intermediate moto
combined the 250cc's and the 125cc's
with the 20 second staggered start.
Tony Berluti jetted his YZ 250 to the;
front of the first moto. Then he
broke out a spare Maico 250 to do likewise second moto. Mark Hildebrand
(Mai) picked off second place first
moto but faded to fourth in the
second.
Crowd-pleasing Kevin
"Goofey" Truax (DC Yam) styled into
third first moto but could only manage
eighth in the final. Dan Lawson rode
to second place in the last moto which,
with his fourth in the first, nabbed
second overall. Steve Vogel (Mai)
threatened early each moto by
running third and second, respectively,
but faded by the time the chedter fell.
A large batch of 250cc Novices hit
the dirt and were led all the way by
local shoe Rood Lighthouse (Hon)
until he unaccountably slowed just
before the checkered and let Eric
Schacht (Hon) by for the win. Bob
Martin (Yam) caught third.
Lighthouse didn't slow a bit in the
second round and he hung a long lead
on the field for the' win and the
overaIl. Schacht broke a throttle cable
and DNF the second trip, letting Don
Bird (Hon) into second and number
two overaIl. Mike Williatns (Yam)
improved his previous fourth by one
spot for third overall.
The even larger batch of 125cc
Novices was also mopped up by Rood
Lighthouse, Kawasaki mounted this
time. He ran away with the win first
. moto and was doing the same in the
second- until he fell. Recovering for
third, his 1-3 was good for the overaIl
win. Richard McCord (Yam, 4-1) and
Billy DelCarlo (Yam, 2-4) fiIled the
other two top spots.
The tiddlers (100/80cc) put on one
of the best shows of the day. Styling
over the jumps, they could have been
contenders in a jumping contest had
there been one. Winnemucca's own
Randy Maga (Suz) won the 100cc
class. Eleven-year-old Sven Stillmock
was impressive, riding his Suz 80 into
the 100cc ranks (in spite of the handicap of the 20·second starting stagger)
to fourth overall and third overall in
respective motos, winning his class by
a mile.
There are two more races in the
Flying W's series: October 21 and
November 4 (the latter a Semi-Pro
event with 150% payback). Better be
there 'cause there wiIl be a drawing to
give away a new KX250 to riders only.
