Cushing had moved into die second spot with D-37's Novice star, Chuck Stearns. who had moved from the middle of the pack on the first loop to third overall. quite an accomplishment. Past the checkered mag, Cushing had moved into the lead. well ahead of runners-up Kurisa, Inman and Statham. Ikeda was the next to be greeted at the finish. with Orlando Apadaca very close behind. The final race of the GP was for the 250cc and Open Amateur and Expert classes. and the sidehacks. of which there were about II entries. The course was watered down during the bre.ak and the "Snake Pit" was filled with water again, too. The sidehacks ran a shortened course. The leader off the first lap was Mike "Sizzlin' Six" Sixbery with MXer Craig Adams nipping at his heels. The course was' .such that passing almost became a lost art. Jim "Mr. Endurance" Connolly was in the third spot. followed by Ed Zarp, Wayne Martin. Bob Rutten, Max Eddy, Bill Saltzman and Terry Davis. The leading sidehack, 112. came through next and was really fIying. Two more sidehacks. 186 and Odom/Neal completed the first lap as Sixbery came through and headed out onto the third loop. By this time. Sixbery had developed a nice lead. Sixbery continued to move well off the third lap with Connolly moving into the second spot. followed very c'1osely by Adams. Eddy had moved into fourth overall· while Zarp had. dropped in behind him. For the sidehacks, 112 and Odom/Neil were the only two to come through on this lap. Five had gone by the lap before. Connolly had taken over the lead off the next lap because Sixbery had developed a fiat rear tire. Adams stayed close to the new leader. pushing him hard. Eddy held on to his fourth spot while Rutten had taken over fifth place. Number 12 was still. the leading sidehack. MXer Adams took over the lead and held for another lap to the checkered. Eddy moved right up behind him, taking fint desert honon.. Connolly dropped back to third with Saltzman, Rutten and Davis intermingled with three sidehacks: 112, 'McMitchell/ Saydal and Sanner/Wilcox. District MX 250cc ace Danny Sanchez was next to take the finish. followed by Senior Bob Doig and Kern Park. Brad Meredith was the fint Amateur to cross the finish followed by Senior 250cc Expert George Zuber and MXer Keith Ehlen. The mayor of Elsinore and some of the city council came to the raceway to watch the proceedings and evaluate the handling of the event. They walked many of the steep hills along the course. watched the riden and the flagmen, and were very impressed. The old-style Elsinore GP through the town of Elsinore has a very good chance of being reborn. The final word probably won't come until the first part of next year, but it is something to look forward to. That event might even bring Steve McQueen out of retirement!
