Jim's is a massive V-8 engined Ford-Honda. A few puurists wer outraged by his runs, for time only, but not appropriately; he was classed with the cars. The car guys didn't seem to mind. Jim, like Ken Davis, found that car tires don't work on bikes over a certain speed him was about 165 - with plenty of torque to spare on his well-engineered motorcycle which has proved itself at Utah Salt Flats Racing ASlIociation meets. Rider Tom Sauter set a record in 2000cc class in fourth gear - they didn't bring enough gean. A Norton specialist, this is George's first Kaw. He manufactures nitrous oxide kits and would like to try it on the salt. Bryan Bowns rides for a group of six or eight regulan who've been coming to Speed Week for about seven yean, hall of them citizens and half motorcycle salesmen or mechanics. The all contribute ideas and work to the handmade bike, and this year they set a record, as usual, with their Honda 500. Jim Langer of Chicago, who makes cams and does porting. is one of the traditionalists who still runs a Harley. His bike is primarily a draper, fuel injected and with an air-shifter automatic transmission. He belongs to all three drag bike organizations and goa to all the nationaJs. The bike ruOl on 88% nitro and is reputed to 'be set on Kill and make 250 horsepower. If it lives, at Bonneville, it should go very fast. The H-D double-engined, turbo· charged streamliner. the Jammer, much rebuilt for this year, was around and ran occasionally, and also stayed a week longer on private time. Don Vesco arrived late, on Thursday night, for one last try with the old 'liner, but left after holing the stainles steel exhaust on Tuesday after Speed Week, planning to return in a couple of weeks. Don would like to get Kawasaki's $25,000 contingency money for beating his own record of last year. After that quest is over, he'll turn to building the all-new KZl!1OOpowered liner for next year, full-time. As the week progl CIIes, bikes break or owners get records and leave. The lineup of vehicles in the pits becomes ragged. The Utah Salt Flats Racing ASlIociation will hold a few weekend meets. But most of the time the salt will be empty, undergoing its yearly cycle of flooding and drying. until the colorful and noisy assemblage that is Speed Week returns in September.
