Manufacturing plants to serve you in Elkhart, IN; Waycross, Ga; and Waco, By W.H. Spencer MONTEREY, CA, SEPT. 29 The Monterey County Fairgrounds came alive with the sounds and smells of the annual carnage known as short track by the Monterey Bay Rams. The dirt floor inside the grandstands had just a few weeks ago vibrated with the sounds of the annual Jazz Festival. The norm for D-36 short track racing is competition, but this facility harbors extremely short straights, tighter turns, and a six foot wall that doesn't give, despite the ever-present assault of the troops. Despite the "short" comings, the event is well attended and usually has some surprisingly good shows; especially among the mini brigade. Pat Ballew scored the big win in the Pee Wee with one newcomer, Josh Chisum, adding to the shorty class, while Jason Morrison took home the brass in the combined 60cc class on his RM. Eric Green took the 85cc win in the ovice over Tony Mitchell and Steve Ochinang hung onto the lead for the Junior win over Dean Vincelet, and then doubled in the 100ccJunior. With Doug Chandler out of the mini ranks and riding his first Sportsman show of his eight year career, little brother Kurt continues to cominate the 80cc Expert class. Out riding Vance Sherfield for that win, he then got a second to Mike Rosa in the 100cc Expert when he kept losing a gear. Jim Pettit took the 125cc Novice bash and crash while Mark Butler kept a cool head in the 250cc Novice and found himself leading when Doug Chandler popped a chain in the deep dirt cushion. Chandler had kept the troops at bay throughout the evening and went on to win the 500cc Novice with ease after winning both of his heat races. Tod Stewart took second in the 250cc Novice over a faltering Chet Patterson while Jon Teraji still loves riding his ancient age BSA to seconds in the 500cc for Yamaha Sports Center. Ron Murphy was doing the leading throughout most of the 250cc Junior but Bob McDonnell put on SQme great pressure moves. When the checkered came out, McDonnell drove his H&S Astro hard off the last turn on the outside and won by inches. The battle for 250cc Expert honors was mainly between Rod Spencer and Danny Moore with Spencer getting the win after a fine pass on his Bud Martin tuned Ossa. Bill McDonnell held onto a tight third pay spot. Tim West had it fairly easy in winning the 360cc Novice main while Gaylon Woods survived for second. Joe Mitchell won the drag race to the corner in the 500cc Junior, winning over John Carter, and Curt Brooks performed very well to win the 500cc Expert after a good race with Moore and Frank Nye.
