Cavness bailed and wrenched his shoulder, which put him out of the race. Cavness had already qualified on the previous week and should get a chance to duel with Bland again at the stadium. Bland, meanwhile, took the Test of the race in fine form leading Tom Miller and Tom Karoj through the flags. Both Tom's rode SuzuItis. Miller, who rode for ITT Canoga Park, finished second with Karoj, riding for Suzuki of Redlanda, fmishing third. . Roben Marino took the second Open Pro contest from holeshot to checkered flag on his Luft sponsored Yamaha. Marino didn't finish the first mota contest however, and wound up with only a seventh place overall. Bland jammed his power packed Maico home behind Marino for a second in the number two contest, but wound up flTSt for the day. Joe D. Price finished the second moto in third but Tom Miller picked-up the second overall with third for the day going to Ron Utaski. Jim Tarantino led the troops in the first mota of the 250cc Pro race with Many Miller going home number two and Raben Marino, entering his second' Pro contest for the day, fmishing third. Tarantino landed an early founh place spot in the second contest and had a difficult time getting around Donald Drasltovich. By the time he was able to make his play, Raben Reisinger running number one and Marino playing out number two, were gone with the wind so Tarantino had to settle for third. No matter, Taranrino still picked up flTSt overall with Marino malting it number two for the day and Many Miller picking up the pay for third. Rick Johnson led wire to wire twice in the 125cc Pro race for his qualifying ticket to the Anaheim Stadium. Along with that Johnson picked up top pay for the 125cc Pros. Going two for two and second overall was Bobby Sullivan on his R&D Suzuki while third for the day went to Chris Morey. Results OPEN PRO: 1. Ric:Il Blond IMaI; 2. Tom Miller ISuzl; 3. B ~ IVeml; Gan, MX 'ails to Get-oH By Bye-Bye Bob Newkirk SUNNYMEAD, CA, SEPT. 23 The Over The Hill Gang en· joyed a comfortable day of racing up and down the hills of DeAnza, one of their favorite southern California ~acks. Get-off Gary, as if shot from a gun, won both motos in the Expert class. He led them in grand fashion the first mota, with Stubby· Steve right behind him. Visiting Nonh member Dump Dale worked himself up from seventh to finish third. In mota two, Pitter Pat led for the fint four laps. Get·off, staning founh, elbowed past Du Du Dan and Rathole Rocky and then stole the show from Pitter Pat. Having fallen in the fim mota, Rathole fought with Pitter uphill and down, finally nailing him for second place. Dinky Dennis and Flaky Frank closed the doors on the Amateurs in the fint mota by running fim and second respectively. Runover Ron and Lizzard Lou, each other's nemesis, battled over third place, dicing back and fonh. But it was Runover leading at the checkered. In mota two, Runover and Lizzard continued the duel, this time for first place. Runover grabbed the early lead; Lizzard, though, showed who was boss and took home the Amateur class first place trophy. Drafty Dennis outpaced the pack of Intermediates to the first uphill tum and held them, at bay for two laps. But Jacknife John, waiting for the right moment, attacked and whizzed by to ride the remainder of the mota out front. Showing no mercy, Kwilt Keith, who had worked up from fifth, pounced on Drafty for the second place spot. In mota two. Drafty took revenge by storming out front from the beginning, keeping the throttle turned on until the checkered flag waved him in. Kwilt Keith came in second, followed by Jacknife John. Chisler Chuck showed the Novice class the fast line around the track, bagging their first mota. Jalapeno Jose hunled up to second, having staned dead last, relegating Baloney Barry to third. If Get·off Gary took the fim place expen trophy, then Novice De· Chicked DeWight should have trophied for the mOlt spectacular"get· off." He got OUI of shape with a handful of throttle, hit a four·foot bank with just enough slope to project him and his bike canwheeling at least 10 feet skyward. Amazingly a little shaken, he shook it off Wlth a. cold beer. In the Novices' second mota Baloney Barry took the holeshot. Jalapeno got around him for fim, and Toad Tom clobbered Baloney for second. Conwa, COPS SRA GPwln By Sue Senn Photo by Action Photographic RIVERSIDE, CA, SEPT. 30 The first of the day's six events was the Senior race and con· ditions couldn't be better. The six·mile track was well laid out, the dust was down and the weather was cool. The number one Senior, "The Hawaiian," Pila Pattison, making his fint appearance in quite sometime, held the lead for the first five laps. Competition Cycles' Charlie Conway was right behind him just waiting for any chance to move his KTM out front. He got the chance in the sixth lap when the big Hawaiian stopped for a quick gas stop. This gave Charlie the time he needed and the win was his. The Hawaiian still claimed second while Don Mardon, riding a 450 Maico. claimed third overall, first Amateur. Richard Prouty, Sr. and Phil Lawerance diced back and fonh, finishing second and third Amateur, while top Novice honon went to Mike Gaines, Rick Campbell and Mac Douglas. Beginner Gary Blandin (KTM) deserves special mention. Gary lost his left hand but not his talent. He will probably be moving up to Novice before long because he earned top Beginner honors again. His closest competitors were Ted Jones and Jack Liddy. Next came the Open race which was won by Craig Adams. Don Maroon (Third Senior in the fim race) introduced Craig to racing ten years ago when Craig was 12. According to Don, Craig's father bought Craig a 250cc Husky, and asked Don to put it together for Craig. Don says the flTSt thing he notked was this taU, skinny , kid with leathen so big he needed suspenden to hold them up. Don took Craig to his first race and Craig trophied but due to a mix up in classification, Craig was disqualified. As time went by, Don taught Craig every· thing he knew and was his top advisor for yean. Now he says, "The student has far surpassed the teacher - I now ask him for advice." Speaking of passing the teacher, in Craig's senior year of high school class instruction of the welding class was turned over to Craig. Craig now owns his own welding shop, JITDS Radiator, in San Clemente. In today's Open race, well known desen rider Eric MacCracken gave Craig a good run for his money. Eric led for tbe first three laps before Craig joined him in a side by side dice for the next several laps. Adams took the checkered followed by M,acCracIteD and Mark Asbury who aced East! West's Wayne Manin faT third. Paul Huffman (KTM) claimed an easy fim Amateur followed by Karl Davis and Lou Duplessis. Top Novice riden were Norman Francis, Richard Day and Monte Pritchette while Randy Wolfe ran away with the Beginner class. The 81-200cc class seems to excell when it comes to fan panicipation. Todays course received as many compliments from the fans as it did the riders. On the flTSt lap it was 'Fred Combs out front with two East/West riden right behind him. Kent Pfeiffer (Premier Yam) and Bellflower Yamaha's Bullit, Kevin Senn, were each malting a bid for first. The second lap found the two expens. Combs and Pfeiffer out front m an almost side by side dice that lasted the entire hour. when Combs became the vietor. The "Bullit" had begun his own battle for top Amateur with his good friend. Bill Holmes. Holmes, who rides his HUlky for the White Cloud Ranch of Malibu, aced his young friend for the fim while Bob FaTr took third. Top Novice riders were Butch Peick, Jim Connolly and Del Shamblin, who vieiously fought off Alben St. George fOT third. Rick Burgos. Tracy Ott, and John Penner were top Beginners. "Sizzlin' Six," Mike Sixherry, showed how he earned the Sizzlin in the 250cc race. On the rlTSt lap, Six· berry, Scott Kinnier, <:;raig Adams, Mike Baker, Eric Mac Cracken, and Scott Pfeiffer were so close it was still anybody's race. By the second lap, Sizzlin' Six was out front with Adams being the only one with in touchable range. On the third lap, Sixberry came by all alone followed shonly by Adams who had a missing rear fender. In the meantime, the pack had broken
