Whitney Blakeslee (Champion Kawasaki, 1:47 laps) took early command of the Open Production race. Aaron PoSt was in second place overall, two and a half seconds back when he crashed at the tight "tum one" left·hander on lap two. Blakeslee held a six and a half-second lead over 750cc class winner Mike Spencer (Kaw) by the halfway flag, followed by Steve Gilbert (750 Hon), Mark Shelton (Kaw), and Kevin Bracken (Due). Whitney was ahead by nine seconds at the end of the 10-lap race. Howard Monise (400 Yam) was first in the 550cc class ahead of Ed Toomey (Yam). Mike Baeder (Yam, 1:43) blazed to a 10·second lead after three laps of Open GP, ahead of Barry Elliott (Yam) and Roberto Pietri (Suz GSIOoo), who had been last off the line. Pietri was third overall at the finish, but first in the Open class. Baeder was first in the 500cc division with Elliott second, now leading th~ class in points 28-13 over fourth place finisher Leland Hancock (Yam). Pat Eagan (Hon) broke a long string of Yamaha victories in the 410cc Prod~ction class, but it definitely_ wasn t easy. He and Howard Monise (Yam, 1:51) were side-by-side the first nine laps of the race (a continuation of their battle from Riverside the week before). Class points leader Ed Toomey, seven seconds off the pace, seemed content to consolidate his points lead over Rob Selvey. Eagan held a narrow lead going into the final lap, and with Monise apparently missing a shift in the infield, he took the checkered flag with three seconds to spare. The 410cc Box Stock class also provided an exciting finish, as Dave Behrendt (Yam) overtook racelong leader Dan Diu (Yam) in the final tum, as Dan glanced over his shoulder. With the Oct. 14 double points race at Willow Springs coming up, several points battles tightened up considerahly. Paul Manning's second place in 200cc GP behind doublewinner Jim Collins (200 Prod, too) gives him a 27-24 lead over Terry Nelson; and Gary Patton moved ahead of Jackie Botti 30-27 with a win in 2.50cc. Production_ Mike Spencer's win ued him for the lead with Tom Hayner in the 750cc Four-Stroke GP class, and his victory in 750cc Production gives him a 27-23 lead over Mark Shelton. Tumer, RObertSOIl, LoceytakeAME $1000MX By John Rocha VALENCIA, CA, SEPT. 30 Indian Dunes' Shadow Glen track was the battle ground, with $1,000 and double points offered by American Motocross Enterprises. The first battle was the Open Pro class, and with 28 entries, some heavy combat was likely. First out of the gate was Yamaha·mounted Andy Jannings followed by Tim Locey and Greg Robertson, with the likes of Goat Breker in 19th and Ron Turner around 25th. Robertson quickly passed Locey, and five la ps went by with little change. However, as they came around for lap six, Locey was running first and had a sizeable lead over Joe Root and Dave Haugh. JanDings and Robertson went down when Robertson tried passing for the lead. By the eighth lap, Locey had a 10se.cond lead over Root and Haugh. WIth Janrungs seventh, Breker ninth and Robertson 10th. Things started happemng fast as Haugh passed Root for second, and a multi-bike pile·up took out Root, Mark White and Bill O~eleue, who had been occupying third through fifth. Breker quickly tagged up to Haugh's rear fender and tried everything to get around Haugh. but had to settle for third. Fourth went to White and Bill Hagen finished fifth_ Jannings took the lead in the second molO, followed by Oveleue, White, Locey, Breker and Hal Strauss. On the second lap, Oveleue fell back to fourth, with Locey taking second away from White a lap later. At the halfway point, Locey slipped past Jannings for the lead, with Breker piloting his Husky into third behind ~hite and ahead of Jannings. With eIght laps down, Breker was gaining a few seconds a lap on Locey with White third, Ron Turner fourth and Strauss fifth_ With the white flag out, Locey could .feel Breker breathing down his neck; m every turn Breker tried to get a wheel underneath. Locey held off the hard charging Husky rider for the overall win. Brelter was second overall with White third and Turner (9·4) took fourth_ In the first 250cc Pro moto. Greg Ro~n and his Wheelsmith Maico arrived at the first tum first with Tracy Oswell. Bobby Kline, Tim Locey and Mike Shoemaker in pursuit. On the third lap, Oswell went down while Kline took over second and Shoemaker blew by Locey 'for third. Pete Snorteland was running fifth, followed by Ron Turner and Goat Brelr.er. On the fourth lap Shoemaker fell and got up running in ninth. By the sixth lap, Robertson had opened up a nice lead. Locey had taken over second with Turner third and Kline fourth. Two laps later though, !urner passed Locey fo~ second WIth Shoemaker taking over fourth. Shoemaker was slowly gaining on Locey, but Breker was doing likewise and a little faster to boot. As the checkered came out, Robertson cruised in for the win ahead of Turner and Locey. Breker slipped past Shoemaker for fourth. As they headed for turn one in the second molO, Shoemaker led the way and Kline and Robertson headed the pursuit. Robertson zapped Kline on tbe first lap while Shoemaker put about three seconds between himself and Robertson. Brett Cross held down fourth ahead of Locey and Turner. At the halfway point, Robertson took the lead away from Shoemaker with Kline running a distant third. But in the next two laps, Goat Breker moved from seventh to third as Kline stalled his engine and lost three spots. After Locey was passed by Breker, Turner picked up the same idea and started moving up. As the race wore down. Shoemaker picked up his pace and started reeling in Robertson, but Robertson was still in the lead as the checkered flag flew. Turner passed Bruer for third and Locey finished fifth. Overall, it was Robertson, Turner, Shoemaker and Breker. "Radical Ron" Turner raced Luft Yamahas in all three Pro classes, and victory was his in the 125cc ranks as he posted a 2-1 moto tally. Jim Holley took second over first moto winner Chris Heisser and Paul Emerson. Resuhs _ 500 PRO: ,. Tom Locey IVam); 2. Goat Br_ 1Hus!; 3. Marte White IMaiI. 250 PRO: ,. Greg R ~ (Mail; 2. AMEwrapsup Cal M'III Series By Judy Greenberg Photo by Bob Greenberg VALENCIA, CA, SEPT. 30 Riders battled down to the wire at the final event of the AME California Minicycle Champion· ships, held on the reversed Inter· national Course and sandwash at Indian Dunes. B!ue and ~old. super trophies awaited the senes wmners, along with gift certificates from S&W,' and contingencies from U.S. Suzuki, Duralube, West Cycle and AME. The lucky winners of the 1980 RM's awarded by U.S. Suzuki, were Pee Wee rider Joseph Lane (RM60), Junior Cyclist Kyle Lewis (RM80), and 83cc Expert George Holland (RMIOO). Sean Frampton and Frank CiolIr.osz came out on top of their classes, and won a stay at the U.S. Suzuki School of Motocross. . Racing grew tight at this last event, WIth double points at stake, Rudy Dickinson led the first gate of 12 and over Modified 83cc Intermediates from start to finish. rat Galan (R&D) was hot on his tail while being pressured hy Skip Godinez. As the battle heightened, Galan went down in the bottom of a sand loop. Godinez and Todd Campbell joined him, and Tom Stout took over second_ Godinez was first up to finish third. The second time Campbell stayed with Dickinson, and took over when he ran into trouble. Godinez put the pass on Stout for second, and Dickinson finished fourth. Dickinson needed that first place win to cap the series, but settled for second overall behind Godinez. Allen Hopper (D&N) put in another day of solid racing for back to back wins and the series title for the 125cc Intermediates. The well·liked 14·ycar· old from Ridgecrest will now enter the Pro ranks, but will be missed by his fellow Intermediates. Robbie Brown finished with the series second, despite a bit of bad luck in the final. Kyle Lewis led Doug Fisher and Shane Trittler in points for the Junior Cycle Modified Juniors as they left the gate this last time. Trittler took wins in both motos, as Fisher tried to take second from Lewis. They both went down in the last lap, but Lewis maintained second, and the edge in points for the series win. Fresno's Frank Ciolkosz has spent most of the series in front of a large pack of 8~cc 12 and over Stock Juniors. The first moto was no exception, as Ciolkosz left the action behind, with Alan Lippie and Gregg Gest dicing for seccond. ;lDd Charles Osterday and Gary Ybarra for founh. When Gest lost a few places, Osterday got by Ybarra for a third finish.
