"I probably could have gotten closer to Darrell than I did." National ''I'm just one point down. just one point," said Jimmy Ellis concerning his National class battle with Greg Theiss for first. Ellis needn't have worried, as Theiss was troubled by poor starts and didn't even come into the front runners battle. Ron Sun was the man out front after the first moto left the line with Darren Rhoten, Ellis. Mike Guerra and Donnie Cantaloupi chasing. Ellis soon dashed into second and found himself part of the tight running group of Sun, himself, Rhoten and Guerra. Cantsloupi was farther back with Georgia's Marvin McDaniel behind. Ellis slammed to the front by lap eight. Guerra went by Rhoten and was scrapping for second with Sun. By the 20 minute mark it was easy to see that barring any mistakes, Ellis had the win in hand. He was moving at an incredible pace and was leaving Sun, Rhoten and Cantaloupi to battle behind. Guerra had dropped out of contention with a seized engine and Moto-X Fox's Randy Kirschbaum moved into fourth on the way to his highest placing in the series._ Ellis led Sun. Cantaloupi, Kirschbaum and McDaniel at the checkered flag. Sun, Cantaloupi, Ellis, Rhoten and Can-Am's Kippy Pierce charged out front in moto two. Cantaloupi saw an outside line and· took it to pass Sun in a sweeper on lap four. Guerra was way back. in the pack.. Sun put up a fight when Ellis tried to get by with Ellis taking every line possible, but to no avail. After four laps of rim to rim dicing Ellis finally got past and started after Cantaloupi. The Cantaloupi/Ellis match began with both riders pushing the stops, shooting off the jumps and running wheel to wheel to the finish. Cantaloupi took the win with Ellis behind and Rhoten followed the pair a long ways back. "It was this close," motioned Ellis marking only a few feet. "He just won. I never was really out of shape. Only one time did I feel a bit out of control. I guess sometimes it looks a bit wild to the specta tor ... Donnie Cantaloupi seemed to think his lead was a bit larger. "I had enough so 1 could have missed a gear and still won. My biggest problem was that I've had bronchitis for two weeks and haven't trained.
