gets one point and the guy who finishes last gets zero points. The fact that the 16 riders are the very best in the country and every one of them can run the four laps in less than a minute should not make it hard to become number one. I am sure' there are many grandstand racers who have thought that way, but it just ain't so. If, like Mike Bast, you could win each of your five events, you could earn a perfect score of 15 points. That is just 'what The Champ did. Alan Christian, this year's track hero, was the guy who most said would dethrone The Champ. As it turned out. Alan got dethroned in turn one of the first lap of his first event when he got too much traction and went down. He could have lost three big points right then and there, but because Brad Oxley got off on the front strai~htaway, the race was stopped and In the restart Alan took the lead and went on to win his first race. Brad Oxley was hurt when he hit the wall and did, go to the hospital, but not until he rode three more times that night - a real will to win. There were highlights in all of the 20 events, like 17-year-old Tony Briggs winning his first two events and he came in seventh overall for the night. In the second round, Mike Bast and Alan Christian met head-on and the victory went to Bast. Christian lost only once more that night, in his final ride. John Sandona beat him that time and Alan totaled 13 points for the night. earning second place overall. Third spot of the night is one of the biggest stories of the year. There will be two events: Friday, Oct. 26 and then on Nov. 2. Just some of the glory for Mike this year included the American title earned on the East Coast, the California State title earned at San Bernardino and the U.S. National Championship at Costa Mesa. His teacher, Jacob Bagnell of Santana High, is also his pit man, friend and the driving spirit behind Larry. There was tie for fourth with nine points between Gene Woods and John Sandona. John did win two of his five events, so he got fourth and Woods got fifth. Mike Faria earned sixth place with 'eight points. Four riders all earned seven points and based on Tony Briggs' wins, he got seventh. Spawn Moran took eighth, Dave Sims ninth and Duane Yarrow 10th. John Cook took the tie over Dan McNeill at six points for 11 th and 12th. A t,hree-way tie with four points occured between Mark Marriott, Brad Oxley, Denny Pyeatt and low man on the totem pole was Leni Faas with just two points. Leni had one of those nights where nothing went right and his poor score is not a true reflection of his talent. Next year, look to see him in the top five. 1972 Rick Woods Scan Autrey Mike Bast Steve Bast Dan Becker Ed Williams Sonny Nutter Bill Cody Don Cullum Les Chankey Larry Shaw Mike Curose Jim Gresham Sumner McKnight Mike Konle Ron Taylor 1973 Mike Bast Mike CurosD Larry Shaw Steve Bast Sonny Nutter Dubb Ferrell Rick Woods Don Cullum Guy Waterson Bill Cody Steve Gresham Mike Konle Sumner McKnight Rich MacMurray Dan Becker Scott Sivadge 1974 1975 Mike Bast Dubb Ferrell Steve Bast , Jeff Sexton Mike Bast Rick Woods Larry Shaw Sonny Nutter Bill Cody Dubb Ferrell Larry Moon Steve Nutter s.tan Beck Mike Konle Scott Sivadge Mike Curoso Bill Gray Ed Williams Steve Nutter Larry Shaw Alan Christian Bill Cody Steve Bast Bruce Penhall Rick Woods Jim Fishback Sonny Nutter Rich MacMurray Mark Cherry Jeff Sexton Scott Sivadge Bob Schwartz 1976 Mike Bast Larry Shaw Bruce Penhall Bob Schwartz Alan Christian Jeff Sexton Rick Woods Steve Nutter Dubb Ferrell • Scott Sivadge Jim Fishback Bill Cody Ron Preston Sonny Nuner Mark Cherry Randy Marsh - No 1 13 - LARRY KOSTA 155 .
