IAbove) Kent Howenon (17) grabs an inside line at turn one.IBelow) Mike
Guerra topped the Suppon class over .Jimmy Ellis and Larry Wosick.
IAbove) Darrell Shultz (20) sailed to a 4-6 fourth overall. IBelow) Chuck Sun
'(66) leads Marty Moates (38). Sun took fifth. Moates sixth.
Jnadilla
ahead of Lackey and Howerton.
Shultz looked like he might be able to
pull away from the others when he
clipped a haybale and went down,
remounting again in fifth spot behind
Husky's Chuck Sun.
With Shultz left behind, soon to be
slowed up even more with a flat tire,
Barnett wicked the gas up on his 250cc
Suzuki and continued to hold off
Lackey's monster green 440cc machine
for the next 15 minutes. Barnett gave
nothing away to Lackey's bigger
machine, even on the huge Unadilla
uphill sections as Barnett kept the
throttle pegged and the transmission
clicking. Howerton, still holding down
third position, was fading rapidly as
the strain of the first moto began to
. show on him.
If they finished in those positions,
with Lackey in second again, then
Howerton would still score the overall
win. Lackey knew he needed to w;'n
and began taking chances in an all out
attempt to get by Barnett which finally
succeeded, assuring Lackey and
Kawasaki of the overall win. Chuck
Sun continued to hold the fourth place
spot to the finish and Pat Moroney
charged his way all the way up to futh
spot ahead of Weinert on the last lap
o,:,ly to be stopped with a shorted plug
wtre.
For a rundown on other riders;
"Magoo" suffered a crash after the
. start of the second moto which left him
fairly well detuned after doing so well
the first moto with third; National
500cc Champion Danny LaPorte
bailed off in the opening laps of the
first moto, bruising himself up enough
to opt for sitting it out for the rest of
the day; and this will be Barnett's last
Trans-USA race as he heads off to
Japan for testing of next year's works
bikes.
National Class
Team Husqvarna's newly-signed
250cc class National rider Michael
Guerra took his box-stock 1980 CR250 production bike, prepared by
Charlie Benson, to a near runaway
victory in the National Support class.
Guerra grabbed the start of the first
30-minute
moto
and
nearly
d!sappeared from sight, building up a
strong 10 second lead over Kippy
Pierce on Can-Am, Yamaha's Donnie
Cantaloupi, Husky's Ron Sun and
Jimmy Ellis on Honda. Ellis made a
determined threat to catch Guerra
with "Captain Cobalt" stuffing his
1980 production CR-250 R3 throuJth
the riders in front of him and closing
to within three seconds of his
hometown Connecticut buddy. Guerra
saw Ellis coming and got back on the
gas even harder to pull out a seven
second lead at the finish. Ron Sun
dialed in one of his best rides of the
Series to pull off third ahead of
Cantaloupi who was trying to' smooth
himself down from the spills which
have kept him from placing well thus
far.
Finishing in fifth overall, after
working up from the back of the pack,
was Moto-X Fox rider Larry W05ick,
riding a pre-production KX-420 UniTrak for Team Kawasaki on a trial
basis for the remainder of the Series.
Wosick got pumped for the final
moto and grabbed the holeshot
himself this time, blasting away with
the lead as the other front runners
tangled in a tight tum and went down.
Guerra explained what happened.
"I think Donnie Cantaloupi went
doWn fmt. I hit him and Ellis hit me. I
heard Ellis yelling at me 'Come on
Mike, let's get goingI''' Mike crashed
again before he finished the first lap
and was back in last place. "I didn't
think 1 could catch Wosick at all, but 1
tried anyway," Guerra said.
Like a scalded cat Guerra scratched
his way through the field to land in
second behind Wosick at the 20minute marlc A good battle looked to
be in the making as Guerra tried to
close the five second lead Wosick held.
With just four laps to go, he was
picking up second a lap on Wosick.
But Wosick found himself with a flat
rear tire and was forced to back off
from the lead and Guerra took easy
control. Ellis also moved up on the last
lap to push W05ick back to third .
Kawasaki was impressed with W05ick's
first ride with them and plan to have
him on Lackey's spare GP bike for
next week's Atlanta race.
Team LOP's Series point leader
Greg Theiss seemed to suffer from an
off day and couldn't cope with the
rough track, finishing no better than
eighth overall.
