Malherbe dropped his bike again, this time breaking tbe front brake lever and had to pit to have the broken lever removed on his RC·450. Glover inherited a well deserved second place as he continued to pull ground on Bell, Lackey, Shultz, Malherbe, ahead of a heavy clash between LaPorte, Sun and Barnett. With 10 minutes to go the gap for the lead between Howerton and Glover narrowed slightly as Kent eased up to conserve what little energy he had left. Lackey was hoping for a second overall finish with his fourth spot behind Bel1. but a crack..d fiberglass tank on his Kawasaki which had been leaking gas since the first laps of the race finally ran dry. Brad was left marooned out on the track with three laps left to go. Maico's Danny "Ma/{oo" Chandle.r bailed off. spraining his wrist after a six lap battle to pass Honda's Steve Wise on the new 400cc RC lever shock AIE·H works bike. Barnett wobbled into the pits with a broken front wheel. The undisputed winner for the second moto in a row was Howerton, who never thought he was well enough to race until he tried - never thought he was well enough to win until he raced. The Rhinestone Cowboy had roped his way around Buchanan looking more stylish and in control than he had in years. He should be sick more oftenl Team Yamaha's Mike Bell finished out the moto in third place behind teammate Glover to claim second overal1 for the day ahead of Honda's Andre Malherbe. National class For the second week in a row Team LOP rider Greg Theiss of Omaha, Nebraska pul1ed out the overal1 win in the National class to take a commanding lead in the Series. The "Incredible Hulk" manhandled his 426cc kitted YZ Yamaha around the rollercoaster Red Bud track as he secured third in the first moto then backed it up with a win in the final race. The first 30-minute moto was won by Team Honda's Jimmy Ellis on a new 1980 production CR·250 R3 bike featuring the new twin downtube frame and center port exhaust engine. Ellis had worked up from the middle of the pack to battle with Suzuki's Scott Gillman at the 20-minute mark for the lead. Behind were Theiss. CMS Honda rider Darren Rbotten. first lap leader Jeff Surwal1 and David Hollis. Previous week's winner Mike Guerra of Team Husky suffered sticking throttle problems which put him back two laps, The second moto saw Scott Gil1man nailing the holeshot, only to be passed on the second lap by Rhotten as KTM's Boo Stichter dropped into tbird ahead of Theiss and Kris Bigelow, one of the three Bigelow brothers in the class. Ellis and Suzuki's Myerscough were mid·pack. Guerra fell at the start and was working up from last position. A few laps into the race Gillman crashed at the bottom of the big ski jump, putting himself out of the race, luckily without inj\!ry, as Stichter moved up to clash with Rhotten for the lead. The Trans·USA Series was proving 250cc bikes to be just as competitive as Open machines as Stichter on the 250cc KTM traded the lead back and forth with Rhotten. riding Marty Smith's 360cc Mugen from Team Honda. In a bid to repass Rhotten at one point, Stichter crashed his KTM into the rear of Rhotten's Honda in a tight left-hander and the two leaders both went down. While they were remounting Greg Theiss blasted his way past to take the lead. Stichter held on to finish the moto in second spot. Moto·X Fox rider Larry Wosick, hampered by a bent foot peg and rear brake lever in the first moto, worked his 440 Maico up from mid pack to pass Husky's Ron Sun and Suzuki's Myerscough for third place. • Results INTERNATIONAL: 1.
