Larry was followed by another mini rider, Jerry Russell, who djd an excellent job for a C rider. First woman in was Jena Lewis, down 17 seconds with Michelle Keast and Debbie Owens tied at a loss of 20 seconds. After a 20·mjnute break everybody else headed out on the second loop which made a beeline straight to the hills, And that's where the course stayedl VentuTing over to the Cal City side only once, tbe course kept you going up and down often enough to catch all but the tOP A riders off their minute. See ya therel RadIcal Ron frIes fhreeafCMC Orange Show By Tom Corley SAN BERNARDrNO, CA, SEPT. 14 "Radical Ron" Turner is back in town, and he's very eager to start winning all of the local CMC motocross events. His 30 sponsor, Luft Shocks, has been of great help to him, and this evening at the Orange Show fairgrounds they sponsored him to ride in all of the )25, 250 and 500cc Pro classes. The flying Whittierite finished in the top three in each event and had his best showing in the 500 Pro race, Since Rex Staten is injured and out of the competition, it made it somewhat easier for Ron to capture the win, There was still plenty of talent on hand, though, and in this group it happened to be Gary Jones. Jones former three· time ational MX Champion, now has his self· prepped , Ammex motorcycle. Ron shot out in front in the first moto and managed to stay ahead of the pack of money· hungry Pros straight to the checkered flag. Jones headed off the rest of the crew in second place while Robert Marino who also rides for Luft Shocks was third. The second moto was similar in that Radical Ron was on top and in line ro win the money, It was different for the other riders, though: they started to trade positions, This time Marino had 1 better race as he worked his way up to second and maintained that position to the finish so the Luft Shock team riders were )·2 in this final race, Alan Smith advanced from a fifth in the first round to a fine third place spot this time while Gary Jones was shoved back into fou rth, At the end of the night after the dust had settled and all of radng stopped, it was time to award the winning Pro riders with the payoff cash. Ron Turner was the mOSt fortunate man who walked off with the biggest cash prize in the 500cc Pro class and won more than any other rider because of IDS three class performances, The 125 and 250ccJunior classes get a lot of enrrants each week. There are so many that as a rule they have to divide them into two divisions. In the 250cc Junior Division I class, a hometown rider was victorious; Kevin Bennett should make all of his friends in San Bernardino happy. Bennett rides a Yamaha and is just getting back into the motocross scene after hanging it up for several years, Victor Anselmi of Rialto was his rival and in the first moto Victor took the first place win over Bennett, In the second moto Victor unloaded, and a couple of guys had to help him hobble off the track, This gave Bennett the ea y win, and his 2·1 score made him the overall 250cc Junior Division I winner. Second place was Jim Calatioto, who finished in front of Dave Whatley, Ken Miller and Greg Roberg, who is also from San Bernardino, 100 JR: 1, Gary Smith IVaml. 125 JR DIV /1: 1. Gang loses cool af Saddleback By Bye-Bye Bob Newkirk ORANGE, CA, SEPT. 9 The Over The Hill Gang came out to sweat together in 100· degree plus sauna-like temperatures at Saddleback Park. Rocket man Absurd AI out·paced the Experts in both motos. Get·Off Gary pushed hard to catch rum but finished second each time, followed by his Maico rimng pal Pitter Pat who, perhaps succumbing to the heat of the day, failed to see the whjte and checkered flag in the last moto. Much to his surprise, he found himself amid the start of the mad 250cc Intermedi· ates and couldn't extricate rumself from the traffic and had to ride a lap and a half with them, ' In the Amateur class, Dinky Dennjs grabbed the lead and won both motos and then rode the CRC Vet's class to boot. Runover Ron placed second twice. Jinx Jerry fmished third in the first moto after having spent a perspir· ing, frantic hour troubleshooting his carburetor. Dippy Del moved up to third in the second moto and along with his first moto points took third for the day, Lemon La rry, rid ing his fi rst race since the Gang's Nationals at Mammoth, smoked the Intermediate class in both motos, In the first malO, Scabby Skip followed Lemon until Jacknife John, lately rimng up front, got by Scabby. Jacknife came close only once in pressuring Lemon. but that was it. The exciting race was for third Jennings fops Lewis in Old TimersMX By Bob Alloy VALE CIA, CA, SEPT. 9 After riding at Pioneer Town the week before, it's a real pleasure to be able to ride at least one lap without encountering that impassible six·foot·deep mud. Rumors are that some Old Timers are still try· ing to find their bikes in the Racing World muck. The action began with the Master class, Blackie Lewis took the lead and kept a terrific pace which he held all the way to finish first. Marshall Jennings then came in second. Moto two saw Blackie again taking the lead but Marshall had other plans as he passed Blackie in the second lap and stayed in the number one position all the way to the finish line. Next event was the Expert division, It was Chuck Woody who was way out there in front in the first molO, No one managed to come close to passing Woody, who wrapped up the win very nicely. Tom Widick moved in to cla;m second place and Buzzy Allen gassed Ills four stroke into third place. MOIO two saw Ray Sanchez get the lead but Widick was soon to appear. Tom then took the lead to the finish for frrst overall. Woody was right there, following Tom very closely for a second place. Allen again buzzed in with a good third. Amateurs saw a lot of action with many, many exchanges of the leamng position. First it was Leonard Sciacca who shot out in the number one spot but soon Bob De Miranda took the lead, Bob held tIDS for three laps until Dick Varvel took over. Dick th" r continued on with the lead until last lap, where Ed Scheidler ti u claimed it. Ed then took rus lead on to vierory followed by Varvel and De Miranda, Moto two began with George Spearing taking the holeshot and holding the lead for (our laps, After the four laps De Miranda flew by, taking the lead and first overall. Spearing came in second and Scheidler followed in there for a third place win, Novices were out in full force with 15 riders on the line. Bob Anderson
