The coune went directly East from Anderson Dry Lake and soon left the generally gravelled area 10 drop in and out of a w~p-de-wash. Some choice - stay in the wash and get seasick from the sand waves or get out and shred your tires like blaclr. cabbage on the Lucerne Dragon Roclr.s: This was a fast course; right after the wash was several miles of slightly downhill flat. Boogie Tune! A pop-tart jump threw you right at Bessemer Mine Road and into the moonscape roclr.s on the other side. On a trials bike, this place is Disneyland; at racing speeds, you could wind up having a granite orthodontist rearrange your mouth. At the eastern edge of the roclr. pile. the coone dropped into a big valley and turned baclr. towards the west for the trip home. The route in paralleled the way out and was so close you could see one part' from the other at several points. Back at the home tum were the gas pits and hopefully your partner. This was a team race and most riden alternated with someone. There were some, however. who rode solo; Kim Hansing, for example. who was the only woman entered. The race was six 25-mile laps long, at least for the leaden. A pleasant Sunday morning ride. Benny Padilla made it look pleasant right at the beginning. At Bessemer Road, he had a 10-second lead over Cary Davies and Jay Orendorff. These three enjoyed what seemed to be about a one minute advantage over the next bunch led by Kenny UJ'~.:m the Donnie MonisonIScott A . team. Cary Mulconery came storming by in sixth. Teams numbered 220 and 208 were the first Norica OD this fint Ia{' and were very close together at th.. point. John Downey came through far and away the first Beginner, a positioa he held without chaIIetaF 10 the end. By the end of loop ODe, Morrison! Atebilon had gotten past Upp and Orendorff and started loop two in second place. Their IDClI1Ient of glory was short-lived and they did DOt ranish among the leaden if they fmished at all. Paul Hinds was maintaining the lead his partner Padilla had established bllt Jim Owens took over for Orendorff and moved their super hot S&.L Yamaha to within striking distance of rant place by the end of lap two. Upp's partner, Ken Hei!. moved to third trying to stay ahead of motatin' Mike Mulconery, who had taken over from brother Cary and was janunin' in Ipite of a hurting foot ~ in the lut race.
