It isn't often that you see a dead
, heat, but that's what happened in the
trophy race as Ted Boody put his Arai·
sponsored XR side·by·side with Bubba
Rush's Edwards Motor Company'
sponsored Harley at the finish line.
Officials were split on the winner and
declared a tie. With 15 lead changes
between the pair - Boody making his
on the backstraight and Rush doing
his work coming off tum four - the
crowd certainly got what they paid for.
Rick Hocking, Scott Pearson and
Billy Schaeffer were lost in' the
excitement, but had 'a good race to
finish three·four five.
National
Hank Scott chose the grandstand
side for his pole position on the three
row start. Morehead, Graham,
Poovey, Jorgensen and Goss were
alongside. Aksland, Brow, Keener,
Springsteen, Parker and Gary Scott
filled out row two while Jones, Kidd,
Wilson and Mitchell were on row
three.

Anything less than the top spot and
Eklund, even though he was. in the
pits, would mathematically clinch the
title.
If there were any team orders on the
Harley squad. nobody told Morehead

about them. He got a drive off tum,
two and opened an immediate 10 bike·
length advantage. Graham, Springer,
Keener, Abland, Poovey, Parker and
the reat followed.
Lap two saw Morehead open the
gap on the field while Springsteen and
Aksland emerged from a four· abreast
pack down the back chute to take
second and third. One lap later and
Akslarid used the draft to bump
Springsteen to third.
On the fifth lap Jorgensen showed
no respect for the defending champ
and dropped him to fourth. The mood
