Germen Frank Schubert. winner of the 250cc ciess. W88 fastest overall.
lAbove) Carl Cranke finished on Gold for the sixth time.IBelow) Greg Devis'
first ISDT finish was es top American in the 125cc class.
Rosso was the fastest of the Americans,
but hiS final score ended up less than a
minute off of Gold status, after his
Wednesday troubles. Darryl Kuenzer
finished 14 seconds behind Rosso, but
moved up in class by two notches to
finish ninth. Ron Bibolzi also did well
in the special test and finished with a
Gold.
Dwight Rudder (Suz) rode most of
the week with a whistle around his
neck, using it to move riders out of his
way on the special tests and on the
trail. By day six, all the riders were
used to the whistle, so Dwight had to
resort to "a blood-curdling .war
whoop" to get one Italian out of the
way in the motocross. Rudder, whose
trip was sponsored by several
Southeastern enduro clubs, finished
with a Silver medal. Hulse, who said
by the end of the week that his back
was feeling pretty good, finished right
behind Rudder. Kevin Davis (KTM)
and Don Cichocki took Bronze
medals.
Jack Penton, the U.S. flag bearer in
the opening ceremonies, finished the
week out by being fastest American in
the 250cc class on the final day. He
finished ninth overall in the special
test and moved to 1!lth in class. Jeff
Fredette, who had broken a toe on the
first day, was second fastest Yank and
he advanced to 17th in the standings.
As they had been .for most of the
week, Ted Leimbach and Drew Smith
were top Americans in the class,
finishing ninth and 10th overall. Mike
Melton (Hus), Terry Cunningham
(Mai), Ray Cosgrove (KTM) and Tim
Hopey (Hus) also finished on Gold in
the 250cc class.
Ed Lojak, riding with a broken
collarbone and showing a lot of
determination, had his bike quit on
him during the motocross. He got it
going again, but didn't make the
required number of laps. He suffered
an 840-point penalty, but it wasn't
enough to knock him off Silver. On the
other hand, Bob Popiel's machine also
quit, and he took the same penalty,
which knocked him down to Bronze.
The other two Americans in the
250cc class, Denny Vandecar and
Terry Davis, took Silver medals.
In the 250cc class, Kevin Lavoie
finished out his week by taking an 11 th
in the motocross, and finished 18th in
class and on Gold.
The final two races were the
highlight of the week for American
spectators. In the next·to·last race, the
leader was John Ayers, and at one
point, Jim Fishback and Dick
Burleson were running second and
third. But Fishback dropped back
momentarily with an engine seizure,
and a Swede came up to pass both him
and Burleson. Ayers won the heat, and
his time stood up as third fastest of the
day in the 500cc class. Most
importantly, he'd started the day a few
points off Gold, and ended it on Gold.
Fishback and Burleson finished 12th
and 15th in the class, respectively.
Carl Cranke (SWM) captured Gold
medal number six (same as Burleson
and Jack Penton) with a 19th in class.
Steve VanWatermeulen (Mai), was 10
seconds behind Cranke at the end of
six days, and took a Gold in his first
ISDT. Jeff Hill fmished on Gold, right
behind Ayers in the standings. Denny
Reese (Yam) and A.C. Bakken
wrapped things up in the next-to last
moto; both finished with Silver
medals.
By the time the last race rolled
along, for a few remaining 500cc class
riders, and the over 500cc and over
750cc . classes, only two Americans
hadn't ridden the final test, Larry
Roeseler and Max Markowitz.
Max got what appeared to be the
holeshot in the two-row, dead-engine
start, but the race was declared a false
start and they did it over.
Roeseler stayed on the line during
the false start and used the opportunity
to advance from the second row to the
first. He got a good start, and by the
time the second lap was half over, he
was in third and chasing veteran ISDT
stars Heino Buse of West Germany
and
Kvetoslav
Masita
of
Czechoslovakia. At the end of the lap,
Larry pulled inside Masita in a turn
before the fast fmish straightaway and
blew the Czech World Trophy team
rider away exiting the turn. Buse got a
look at Roeseler's rear fender half a
lap later, and after that Larry said
good-bye and pulled out 1!l seconds on
the West German before the finish,
setting the fastest 500cc time of the
day, and winding up sixth in the
overall class standings. Markowitz
earned a Silver medal.
Team Mexico returned to the ISDT
with their three man Moto-Club del
Valle Mexico. Top scorer on the team
was Barry Higgins (Mai), who took
home his second Gold medal in a row.
(The one last year was earned as a
member of the U.S. squad.) The other
two Mexican riders, Lars Larsson
(Hus) and Fred Cameron (SWM) took
Silver and Bronze medals.
