The small purse makes sure the factory staTS stay away, with the exception of Jimmy Ellis of Team Honda who has been on the injured list so long he didn't have enough grading points to ride the Intet'national class. To compound his problems, Ellis had been sick the previous week. In the opening ~ minute race Clark Jones, on his Standard Crank Honda, pulled out the lead off the start only ta lose it one lap later to Donnie Cantaloupi in his first race with Team Yamaha when Jones stuck himself in the mudhole. Team Suzuki's Scott Gillman moved up to trade the lead with Cantaloupi for two laps, then Cantaloupi disappeared with a strong lead as Gillman retired with an injured hand for the remainder of the day when he jumped off in the mud as well. Cantaloupi cruised with his 250cc works Yamaha during mast of the race, running some 10 seconds ahead of CSM's Darren Rhotten on a 1160cc Mugen Honda and LOP's Greg Theiss with a 426cc YZ Yamaha. Undetected was Mike Guerra who had been pushing his 250cc Husky through the pack, clasing on Cantaloupi at a rate of 11-4 seconds a lap. It was obvious that Guerra was faster than Cantaloupi as he caught up in the last lap, Guerra already having made easy work of Theiss and Rhotten. With Guerra knocking on his rear wheel for an open door, Cantaloupi panicked when they reached the mudhole section and chose the WOTSt and deepest rut right through the middle of it. Cantaloupi stuck his Yamaha up to the tank as Guerra took the long line around the outside of the mudhole to score the WiD. IBelow left) LOP's Greg Theiss took the National class win.IBelow right) Chuck Sun was top American. The second and final moto had Greg Theiss winning the start this time, but before the first lap ended it was Jimmy Ellis who was doing the leading. After surviving the flTSt moto Jimmy must have figured he wasn't as sick as he thought he was and decided to get on the gas of his RC-450 Honda. Suzuki's Brian Myerscough was running third as Mike Guerra passed Can-Am's Kippy Pierce for fourth. Guerra was trying to make up for lost time after he and Cantaloupi had collided on the opening lap and gone down. Cantaloupi's Yamaha was the worse for the brief encoutner and he was put out of action as Guerra remounted his new 1980 model CR Husky to bum up the track and quickly close on Theiss. Guerra needed to pass to pull off the overall win. Making matters easier for Guerra was the fact that Theiss was tired and slowing down, but just as Guerra closed for the kill his Husky began to lose power from a pouible ignition problem and dropped him back. Theiss held on to third place behind Ellis and Myerscough, which was good enough to give him and Team LOP the win. • Results pushing and I just couldn't get any closer," explained Sun. Andre MaIherbe of Belgium was the excited overall winner on his Team Honda bike. Chuck Sun was the surprising top American with an equal number of points in second place. quite a happy change .of luck from what had thus far been a disappointing season for the Husky rider. Mike Bell claimed third overall ahead of Howerton as Arlo Englund posted the top privateer spot in fifth with his Vickery Yamaha of Denver bike. 18 National Class The National class this year remains INTERNATIONAl.: 1.
