Fernandez and Ballington were joined by' Villa in their fight for the lead. Walter looked in tremendous form. he had been down in midfield in the early stages but swept through to take the lead on the tw.entieth lap. A lap later Ballington made a big mistake and dropped down to ruth spot. Then to prove just how tricky things were out on the circuit. Villa also slid off and lost a lot of ground. Fernandei took full advantage of his rivals misfortunes and went on to win. Chased home at a respectable distance by Roland Freymond (Yamaha. Villa and Herve Guilleux having an im· pressive ride on the BIT. . The martial tones of the Marseilles blared out over LeMans after the 125cc race which followed. Guy Bertin (Motobecane) followed up his Czech GP victory with another win. thanks to a last bend. last· lap crash by Angel Nieto (Mineralli) who flipped over the handlebars after snatching the lead. Nieto had shadowed the young Frenchman for most of the race and seemed to be playing his usual waiting game. but after taking the lead on the last lap the little Spaniard threw it all away. literally. at the final bend. Kork Ballington completed his domination of the 250cc class wheri he destroyed the opposition to win the lightweight race from Gregg Hansford (Kawasaki) and Patrick Fernandez (Yamaha). • Finally Rolf Biland (LCR· Yamaha). took another step towards filling the remaining gap in the season's world championships record book by win· Kawasaki-mounted Roy "Frog" Thacker of Lynchburg, Virginia got the hole shot in the final round of the NHRA Top Fuel Motorcycle event and stuck it to the competition with a 7.84 sec., 175.43mph run to win the Top Fuel Eliminator title at the prestigious Indy Summemationals. Roy, who runs out of Lynchburg Kawasaki, is now the man to beat at the final NHRA Top Fuel event scheduled for Ontario, California, October 5-7.
