and who won't be racing is twofold. Bob Hannah fans won't get a chance to see the defending champ in action. A broken leg suffered while water skiing on August 18 has put an end to the Hurricane's racing for the rest of the season. Don't be surprised if he turns up to spectate. Roger DeCoster, four time Trans· AMA MX Series Champion. who played an instrumental part in the growth of the series, is a big question mark. DeCoster had repeatedly said that he would retire at the end of the 1979 GP st:ason and that he would not ride the Trans· USA as a farewell gesture. However, he has informed the promoter of the opening round at Mid·Ohio that he will spectate and not race. We will have t'o wait and see if he sticks to his word. Honda's Marty Tripes is also a question mark surrounded by conflicting stories. It is rumored that Tripes will move to Yamaha when his contract is up on September SO. It is also rumored that he has a gentlemans' agreement with Honda team manager Gunnar Lindstrom to ride the entire series. A third rumor insists that he 'may not ride at all. In any event, Team Honda will field steve Wise and Warren Reid in the International class. Jimmy Ellis will do his thing in the National class. Injuries hav~ sidelined Marty Smith and Gary Semics. Yamaha will have Rick Burgett, Mike Bell and Rex Staten in the International class along with Broc Glover. State,n is only a possible starter in early events sinc~ he broke a couple of ribs on September S. Newly signed Donnie Cantaloupi will probably ride the National class. One item of interest is that Glover may be seen on a one-twofive in one or more events. He also has the choice of a 250, but no 500cc class machinery. Kawasaki's one-two punch will come from GP competitor Brad Lackey and Jimmy Weinert. Gaylon Mosier and Tommy Croft, injured earlier this season, remain doubtful starters. Jeff Ward will probably ride 250cc machinery. Team Suzuki should have a full complement of riders on hand led by 500cc National Champion Danny LaPorte. Kent Howerton, Mark Barnett, Darrell Shultz and Brian Myerscough are also ready to roll. The non·factory contingent will find riders backed by LOP, Moto-X Fox, DG and m'any other familiar and not so familiar sponsors out to get their licks in against the factory might. Husqvarna's Hakan Carlqvist comes back to America with a bit of a score to settle. Carlqvist put in quite a show at the 250cc USGP in July, but it was tempered by the fact that he had to ride to clinch the title rather than ride to win. Based on his perform, mce there, he should prove to be the number one threat to an American win· ning the titre this year. Another rider not to be counted out is Andre Malherbe. He came on strong in the season ending 500cc GP's to take third place in the standings away from Brad Lackey. He would like nothing better than to kick dirt in everyone's face . . More foreign entries are expected for the later events. 500cc World Champion Graham Noyce may make an appearance, once his committment to the British National Championships has been taken care of. The American/European Challenge and the wide open equipment rule should add a little spice to the proceedings and make for a good show. Although the show will lose a little of its 'international flavor due to declining entries, it is still the only place where you can,see all of our best racing head to head.
