Taylor, who's been out for several months with injuries, seemed to be having difficulty getting his bike out of the corners as strongly as Davis. He soon dropped to second as Davis toolnhe lead that he would hold to the wire. Meanwhile, Jack Beckham (Suz) was putting in a strong drive through the pack. to keep Davis honest. The race for the lead settled down to a Davis/Beckham battle but the pa,ck was still shuffling with Ronnie Taylor out for two laps to get gas. Crashes in the pack left Mike Farmer (Yam) third. Beckham disappeared on the last lap, af~er dogging Davis for most ohhe moto, allowing Davis to cruise in for ,the win with Farmer second and Mike Moliere (Yam) third. I The second moto got underway with almost half the riders electing not to restartl Keith Davis grabbed the lead and easily won. Ronnie Taylor, pushing Billy Harrison in second, looked like Davis' only competition until Billy went down in a tight turn taking Taylor with him. Mike Farmer and Clovis Cisneros (Hon) squeezed by 'for second and third. Farmer crashed hard on the next lap and di.d not leave the side of the track until the moto ended. Davis now had a commanding lead and Clovis was fairly secure in second, but he was followed by Mark Taylor (Hon) who was being harried by his older brother Ronnie. They finished in that order with Mark holding third but not having an easy time of itI l25cc Experts and Intermediates were combined and Russell Powers (Hon) won the first moto very convincingly with a strong ride. The second moto held a surprise. Steve Turner (Hon), just seconds after climbing off his 250cc, grabbed the holeshot and held it to the end I Turner, an Intermediate rider, rode a flawless race to win but Russell Powers, who was blasting through the pack from a fifth place start, was the man the crowd was watching. Powers caught Turner on the second to last lap but the tight track and no mistakes on Turner's part kept Russell in second. Steve Turner· (Hon) and Mac Whiteside (Kaw) were the ones to watch in the 250cc Intermediate class with Whiteside taking the overall win by virtu.e of w~nning the second moto to break the tie. Longtime Austin rider Billy Effinger (Yam) put together his first overall in the Open Intermediate class with a second in the first moto and a commanding win in the second mota with nearly half a lap lead over second place Ricky Lloyd (Yam). Glen Ingram (Kaw) had to earn it, but he was able to bag the overall after beating off the attacks of Steven Haag (Suz) and David Reneau (Pen) who took a pair of seconds apiece in the 250cc Novice go. • t 0') I:"'- 0') ~ ~ C'l I-< Q) ..c e ...
