............................................ E Western hotline ~ Stearns left everyone else behind from there on. Dan Paulson (Suz) from 'The Suzuki Place" had his share of troubles and got stuck in the waterhole a couple of times. Rick Atkins of R&D Racing Engines was back in action, leading the 125cc Pros who trailed behind. Atkins got on the P.A. just before the second moto to let everyone know when the race was going to start. With the extreme heat, it was necessary to take a break. He shouted out, "All of you Pros come over to the starting line 'cause you're going to get smokedl" Actually, Mike Stearns was the one who left the others behind. Stearns dusted off Coffin and won the 250cc Pro class overall. Coffin was second in this race and for the day. It was reported that he cut the track in the final moto. so he was penalized one lap, but that didn't hurt too much. Atkins came through for the 125cc Pro win while Dan Paulson was the 500cc Pro winner (and the only contestant). It appeared as if he had troubles in the last race and pulled off of the track early. SEPT. 9 Elsinore Raceway has been around for about 12 years, and it is well known for its Saturday night IT racing, but now they've 26 '--- introduced a new CMC Motocross pro· gram on the second and fourth Sunday of every month. Rick Atkins and his family were on hand to put forth their best efforts and to make sure that the program was handled smoothly. Because everything was new. the riders had to vote on how many laps they wanted to ride. The heat of the day influenced some of the riders' decisions. It was quite a scorcher - definitely beer drinking weatherl When the rubber band snapped in the first race, the 125cc and 250cc Junior riders took off together. Dave Kleoman (Yam). of the 250cc Junior class. shot out ahead and was doing well. although he fell once. Dave Whately (Hon) controlled th.,.lead and took it straight to the checkered in front of Keoman. Mark Rizh was in command of the 125cc Junior class while the rest of his competition was having a heck of a time; Kelly Bishop crashed, while Don Myron got a few flags tangled up in his rear tire. Dave Whatley outrode everyone in the second moto and led Kleoman by a few lengths. This was exactly how they finished on the trophy list. Kelly Bishop surprised himself in the final round as he placed in front of everyone in his class. This was the first time he had eveT finished a CMC moto in first placel He came through the finish with dirt in his teeth and started howling out loud because he was so excited. Mark Rizh placed second but captured the first place trophy over Jack SCOIl and Don Myron. The combined Pro race was quite exciting. Eric Coffin (Hon) of the 250cc Pro class was stylishly dressed in an old Miller Mano jersey. Coffin got the best start and led for a lap or so till Mike Stearns (Mai) made a pass while coming out of the waterhole corner. For added incentive, Escondido Subaru dealer Joe Erler offered an extra $25 to the winner of each Con· tinental Moto-Sport Club Pro class. The first race of the day featured the Open Pros in which Lee Ramage maintained his reputation as a regular holeshot artist aboard his Maico. Steve Rhyan (Mai). Team Green rider Tommy Croft and LOP's Marty Moates (Yam) each slipped past him by the end of the first lap, though. Moates powered by Croft on the uphill the following lap when the Uni· Trak's motor suffered a slight seizure. Croft nursed the bike around in third place before pulling out after the halfway point. Rhyan simply stretched his lead the rest of the moto and had third place Chip Howell (Hus) in sight by the time he got the checkers. Steve Fry (Yam) rode in fourth with Track 'N' Travel Mako pilot Mike Niccum fifth. Moates stuck his bike into the lead at the start of the second moto with Rhyan matching his every move. Their duel carried them further away from Ramage in third (who DNF the first molO when his bars snapped on the downhill and sent him sprawling) with each lap. Rhyan finally zipped past Moates when Moates skidded to a halt on lap eight with the rear end of his bike' locked up. forcing his retirement. After that, it was a replay of the first moto as Rhyan took the win by more than a minute ahead of Ramage who just held off Howell at the line. Niccum came in fourth to tally a third overall.
