Ivan van den Broeck broke 'his leg in Saturday practice, leaving Andre Malherbe (Hon), Harry EveTts (Suz) and Roger DeCoster (Suz) to face the world .class competition shorthanded, Nonetheless, they managed to top the second place British team 112 to 51. New 500cc World Champ Graham Noyce (Hon) led the four-man English squad of Rob Hooper (Mai), Neil Hudson (Mai) and Vaughn Semmens. Third went to the West German team of Herbert Schmitz, Fritz Kobele, Werner Schutz and Hans Maisch with 611 points. Team Russia followed, then Holland, Sweden and Denmark. Moto results saw two Dutchmen, Gerard Rond and Gerrit Wolsinlt, take the two wins, but in the team scoring, it wasn't enough. Rond finished ahead of Noyce, Everts, Malherbe and DeCoster in round one. Wolsink beat Carlqvist, Everts, Hudson and DeCoster in the second mOlD. Other bits: Rond ran out of gas while holding· down second place in round two; Noyce DNF the second moto after tagging a rock with his foot and injuring his knee; Malherbe suffered a second moto flat tire and finished 12th. 6 Rumor of the week: Heikki Mikkola did not ride the Motocross des Nations due to a back injury incurred while practicing the week before the race. He's said he will retire. He saes his many injuries during the 79 season as an omen and has decided not to compete in 1980. A sharp-eyed reader (Ron Pierce) noticed an error in last week's Yoshimura ad. The copy listed Pierce as having finished third behind Feddie Spencer and Yosh teammate Wes Cooley at the July 15 Sears Point Superbike race. Nope, Wrong. Pierce finished second, Cooley third. And don't forget the Fifth Annual U.S. National Four-stroke Motocross Championship, presented by Knobby In last week's issue of CydeNe. . lSept. 12. 19791, there appeared an article stemming from a BLM news release. The Phantom Duck of the Desert feels It is important to point out some of the "highlights" the BLM missed. The litigation was settled between the Duck and the BLM with a stipulation for dismissel, which was written by The Phantom Duck of the Desert's attorneys. The stipulation was an "agreement" between the Duck and the BLM. The agree.ment obligates the Duck to discourage people from perticipatlng in illegal events and make sure that Mr. J.R. Smith is content. The agreem.nt also obligates the BLM, who recognize the 1978 trail ride should not have needed to have taken place, to discourage people from participating in illegal events. But a real highlight in the agreement is that the BLM will solicit public participation in a monitoring program for.a 1979 Thanksgiving waekend event. Watch Cycle Ne.. and your local newspapers: the BLM will need your assistance. Mr. Gerald Hillier, Riverside District Manager for the BLM, has stated in court that at least 80 percent of the California Desart Conservation Area is available for ORV use. There are rules and regulations, 80 be sure to know the rules for the area you wish to enjoy. For details, contact the BLM Riverside District Office, 1696 Spruce Street. Riverside, CA 92507. McKEY The Phantom Duck of the Desert Louis also forwarded to Papa the Fontana He,,,,,,.,,..., a UPItoreport aofnewspaper clippingItfromIeed to a legal the settlement. Included a few surprises. According the author, the "agreement may IB-to-VI race this year Instead of the 'unorganized' race staged last November." And It continues further on stating, "The agreement provides that federal officials will consider Issuing a permit for the race this year - denied last year on environmental grounds - if the motorcycllsta and environmentalists develop a suitable plan to protect the desert." The final shocker was found in the closing two paragraphs: "The Amerlcen Motorcycle Association and the Sierra Club are working together on rules for a ravial of the race, said AssIstant U.S. Attorney James Arnold. The BLM Is asking for public reection, he said.' "A trial race may be held on Oct. 12 to test the compromise, Arnold said." McKey e1so took issue.with saveral points in the BLM press release. He emphasized that it was the Phantom Duck people who wrote and submitted the slx-point stipulation, not the BLM: the judge approved it and the BLM was "forced" to sign. The press re. . . . stated that "the defendants agreed that an event such .. the 1978 Barstow to Las Vag.. trail ride should not take place without a BLM permit." McKay's response was that the release writer was "dreaming." Shop International and ""otocross Nutrition, Ltd. It all comes down on Nov, IS at Carlsbad. Dial 714/45217S11 or 7I4/96S-2124 for details. Curious about the 1980-model motorcycles? Well, so's Papa, and· he's been busy dialing the phone and pestering the P.R. people at most of the mIInufaeturers for Info. Than. in #40, Papa's hoping to show you the '80 Hondas. Yamaha and Suzuki are still question marks, but the 01' boy's working on it. Rumors about 'SO motorcycles keep flowing in; here are a few of this week's most interesting: Watch for an all-new top-of-the-line streetbike from Suzuki, two versions of it, in fact, a standard and an "L" model. They also will most likely introduce a larger displ!,cement driveshaft model than their present GSS50. Cafe styling will probably enter the Suzuki line-up on two different displacement models, one for the big bore fans and one for the midsize econo-cafe-racer. And don't be surprised if some terrific-looking off- road models arrive on your dealer's floor in the next couple months, improved PE and DR machines. From Kawasaki, we anticipate three new four-cylinder streetbilles in the 400750cc range as weD as some Uni-Trail machines for the dirt, Motorcycle Sefety foundation has announced its 1979 awards program to recognize and promote excellence In motorcycle safety programming.
