Gregson, Benek,
and Wood share
the spoils at
Northwest
Challenge MX
By AetiC)n OZ
WASHOUGAL, WA, SEPT. 2
If consistency is the name of the
game, and rewards are based on
that fact, then the Lord smiled
upon the sport as it rained again
for the Northwest Challenge. Despite
the fact, riders from aU over turned
out for what turned out to be not a
bad day at all for the mudders.
All Pros had one-half hour to
practice in the goo and they took
advantage of the time. By the time the
125cc Pros lined up, the day was
forecast - rain period; let the air out
and go for it was the hot set-up. Phil
Larson, Kaw Hi-point, led the first
three laps before LOP-sponsored
Mark Gregson (Yam) dialed it past to
pull to a wide lead over the rest of the
riders. Kevin Jansen (Kaw), who has
ridden his share of mire, was able to
hold but not gain on Gregson. He
pulled a highly respectable second in
the first moto.
Dave Didier was the story this day
behind Gregson. Riding a Yamaha,
Daft made up his time in the whoops.
He pulled up to Jansen but could not
pall before the 50 minute flag came
out. A third for the first moto was
what Didier managed after a semi
good start. His riding was superb_
Gregson got the second moto
holeshot and never let go. Two other
riders also looked very good: Gary
Kuest and Dave Didier. Dave
improved his first moto performance
to a second in the last U5cc Pro moto.
Mike McCormick (Yam) was able to
come from behind to finish third and
Gary Kuest was able to repeat his first
moto fourth for third overall. Kevin
Jansen mired his green machine to a
fourth. overall and McCormick
wallowed to a fifth for the day.
Thirty-eight 250cc Pro riders came
to the line for their first moto. Super
names from all over the northwest and
northern California met at the line,
many for the first time, under
somewhat less than ideal conditions.
