This hurt his score severely; Todd Peterson took advantage and claimed second overall money ahead of Bob. Roger Hensley headed off the rest of the pack on the list which included Steve Davis, Tony Gomez, Curtis Rough, Jerry Hensley, Ron Blanton and Rick Johnson. Some of the very top Pros had their chance to win a cash prize tonight. All they had to do was take a great leap off of. a high flying jump and whoever langed the farthest got the cash. Rory Holladay took his Maico to the 65 foot mark - that was pretty impressive: but there. was an even better jump yet to come. . Tim Lunde gassed his Yamaha to the 75 foot mark, then Jerry Raymer set the all time record as he laUJll;hed off and came down at an incredib1e 95 feet away! This was an easy win but there were still others who gave it a stab. Juan Benavidez was marked at 70 feet and Rock~t Rex Staten was the second best jumper as he hit the 80 foot mark. This contest certainly had a lot of spectator appeal to it; everyone was just waiting for someone to loop their bike backward. But it was well worth the try, prOllided you came out of it with no broken rimsl Results 50 JR: I . Newton Acev_ ISull; 2. jeremy McGlalheny ISuz); 3. Sal Gonzalez lSul). MINI JR OIV 1: 1. Going into Wednesday night'S final program Kevin Graves and Gary Rodriguez were tied up in points and the pressure was really on. In the first moto Graves blasted off in second behind eventual winner Woody Carlson, with Rodriguez back in sixth. Gradually Graves began slip· ping back and Rodriguez began picking 'up the pace and he moved to fifth as Graves went to fourth at the checkered. In the deciding go· round Carlson again blasted off in the lead with Graves and Rodriguez very' close behind. It was fairly obvious that Carlson was going to win, but' the packed stands (everybody was out of th~ pits) were watching the drama taking place behind the leader'. Graves and Rodriguez were side by side each lap with Graves always managing to maintain ·a slight edge. Then, Rodriguez overcooked it and went a little wide, allowing 'Ken Coon to slip into third. It looked like it was all over for Rodriguez, The last lap flag came out and all Graves had to do was cool it, right? Wrongl Coon went after Graves for second and the two went into a real bar· banger which resulted in Graves getting off his groove, Rodriguez was suddenly alongside Graves who was ~mable to get up to speed for a few yards. That was all it took. for Rodriguez to move by and he took the title off a tie· breaker thi rd place 'overaW Carlson's win, which moved him into the CMC Pro ranks, was rather over·shadowed by the championship battle going on behind him. But Rodriguez and Graves gave fans the best moto of the year, and they certainly deserved the cheers, April Dunlap broke out of her deadlock with season long point leader Glenna Canaris to pick up the Women's Open claM championship. Ami Lemon squeaked out a close one over A,j. Conney in the Mini Juniors to move back into third in the final point standings with Conney almost nipping points champ John Phillips, In ATC action, the big race of the night was the tie· breaker win by Jim Baxter in the 91cc·I13cc Modified class over Larry Russel. Baxter comes from a real r.acing family; his dad Bob and brother Jerry are top San Diego area Super Stock Car racers, and his mom, Barbara is a past Powder Puff Stock Car Champ! AUG. 26 With a surface offering about as much traction as talcum powder on glass, riders had to exercise a bit more caution than usual lest the terrain suddenly sweep them away at the CMC event here today . Returning to racing after an injury· dictated layoff, Gary Ogden screeched his FMF·backed. Mugen·kitted Honda to the front of the first 125cc Pro moto. A sticking throttle, however ca\ised him to drop it just before the uphill on the first lap. It stuck again at the bottom of tbe downhill, forcing him to look for a clear place to land in a hurry. He decided to call it a day after that. Rick Joh.nson (Yam) took over Ogden's former spot and made it clear for the remainder of the moto that h(' didn't intend to give it up, Tim Lunde (Yam) had a sure second until the last couple of laps when his rear tire quit holding air, letting Bob Elliott (Suz) then Vanya Samarin (Suz) cruise by. Bob Sullivan (R&D) squeaked by on ,the last lap. Don Fuller (Suz) led the first part the second moto chased by Samarin, Scott Johnston (Suz) and first mote winner Johnson. Johnson wasted no time in starting his charge to the front, getting by Johnston on lap two, but dropped it in a turn on the next lap and lost several places before getting started again. He worked his way back up to third and was going after Elliott. now second behind Samarin, when his front end skated into a hole after landing off a jump on lap eight. It put him on his head and out of the race, Elliott grabbed the lead fr • Samarin on the next lap and ",-In going away. Samarin. Sullivan, Andy Northrup (SoP) and Bryon Antonacci (Yam) trailed him in. In the 250cc Pros. Tony Wanket jetted his Yamaha into the lead imrI!ediately with Steve Rhyan right behind on the Roo, waiting impatient· Iy for him to make a mistake. Though feeling the pressure, Wanket wasn't about to blow it with a careless error, Rhyan figured that the only place to a ttempt a clean pass was
