Lechlen, Dunlap dominate CMMC MX By Rod Eschenburg Photo by Photocross SAN DIEGO, CA, AUG. 19 Ronnie Lechien (R&D Suz) returned home from the Ponca City, OK, NMA Nationals Friday, got dad Dick to knock the mud 30 off the scooters and returned to Barona Oaks on Sunday with nary a trace of "motorhome lag" to sweep the Stock and Modified Expen Minicycle classes over perennial rival Kenny Dunlap (Suz). Dunlap came back for a second straight 105cc Minicycle win as Lechien had double slide-downs in the first moto but then came back for a win in the second round to go with his first moto fourth for second overall. Intermediate rider Larry Butler (Yam) came up with a great ride for third. Butler then went on to take the Stock Intennediate (12-16) over Scott Richeson and Speedway 117 CMC point leader John Phillips, and a second behind Kawasaki rider John Faure in the Modified ranks. Both these riders should be Experts by year's end. The Novices are producing some newcomers. as second month rider Randy Rush (Kaw) came up with a charging two for two win over "veteran" Mike West in the Modified Novice (12-16) class and then ran a very close second to West in the Stock Novice (12-16) class. Quincy Kawasaki rider West should be there with the Intennediates by next month! The 9-11 Intennediate class is developing into a real three-way point battle this year between John Conney, Frankie Brundage and Thor Bjornstad with last Sunday being no c;xception, as Bjornstad grabbed the I05cc 9-11 class, Conney took the Modified 80cc class, and Brundage gr,!bbed the Stock 80cc class. The wins came in pairs in the motorcycle classes as Kawasaki rider .," . David McGhee swept the Experts, Charles Harries (also Kawasaki) took two close Intennediate wins over Kerri Paulson, and Bob Voorhees went two for two in the Novice classes. Then to finish'it off Marty Stone swept both 100cc Novice classes. Lots of changes in the cou~ at Barona by track referee Frank Brundage plus an incredible cool, misty, unseasonable August Sunday made for a beautiful day of racing for all 170 riders on hand. Barona Oaks races every first and third Sunday from the first Sunday of February to the first Sunday of December. Results MINICYCl£ ClASSES STOCK EX; ,. Romio Lechien lSuzl; 2. Kenny Dunlop ISuzl; 3.
