With the gas crunch easing. the turnout of racers is getting bigger and tonight showed that. AI 'Baker's FMF Yamaha Support rider John O'Mara is. making a habit of winning the 125cc Pro class and tonight was no exception as he put together back to back wins, holding off some strong competition from U.S. Suzuki rider Steve Schmitz and Yamaha Support rider Tim Locey. Moto one saw O'Mara taking the holeshot and the lead. With Schmitz pushing hard in second and Locey in third, O'Mara held on for the win. Round two again saw O'Mara with the lead followed by Locey in second and AME Yamaha-mounted Jerry Shore in third. Shore held off the strong charge of Schmitz, who had to settle for fourth in round two. The overall for the night went to O'Mara with Locey talring second and third going to Schmitz. International MIC rider Mike Shoemaker (Yam) put together back to back wins in ~he 250cc Pro class as he held Tim Locey (Yam) to two seconds and Kolbe Can-Am rider Bob Kline to third. The stan' of the Open Pro race saw Cole Bros. Maico pilot Andy Jannings taking the lead followed by Daren Oliver (Yam) and Westlake Suzukimounted Steve Richard. These three fought it out the entire moto but Jannings was able to hold onto the lead with Oliver taking second and Richard taking third. Round two again saw Jannings taking the lead followed by Oliver, who really put the pressure on Jannings and with one lap to go put the pass on Andy to take the lead. The overall for the night went to Oliver with Jannings taking second and third going to Ski's Maico rider Dave Czerwiski. Bill Boren Honda's Greg Boren grabbed back to back wins in the 125cc Intermediate class with second going to Chris Morton (Suz) and third to Crotch Rocket Factory Kawasaki"mounted Cindy Dumo. CA, AUG. 17 The Orange Show Fairground racing pits have been crowded with Junior and Intermediate qass motocross racers. Without any doubt these riders are trying to progress to the Pro ranks so that they can be sponsored to go after the big money. There are several excellent prospects for the Pro classes and one could tell this just by watching die night's program. In another year or so, Jeff Austine should be' all set for the faster class. Jeff won both' the l25cc Junior division tW'o 'and the 250cc Junior division two races. Austin lives right here in the city of San Bernardino and quite a crowd was on band. to see a hometown rider whip the other competitors. In I25cc Junior action I\ustine was challenged by a Suzuki of -Redlands shop rider, Joey Thomas. He captured the first moto and took the win in front of Austine andJoc! Brouscard. Austine changed this around in the second and final moto as he led the entire way. Thomas was in second while Brouscard placed third. Austin~ picked up the king size first place trophy over Thomas and Brouscard. The 1251;C Junior division one race was very exciting to watch. Alben St. George looked like he was going to be the easy winner. In the first moto Alben smoked them and captured the win over Steve Venny and Ray Eberlin. The real action took place in the -second moto when Eberlin and St. George scrambled side by side for the lead. No one was gaining on them. Then disaster struck - Eberlin and St. George collided and fell down while coming out of a corner before the finish line. This was an excellent opportunity for Dave Barnes of Redlands Suzuki to cruise into the first place position. Venny and Scott Mars advanced to the second and third place position while St. George and Eberlin had to settle for fourth and fifth. C ir ) h < i I· 1 9 • _ r .. CJ 1;1.
