South Dakota. "People come because it·s the biggest and best."
Sturgl. I. an adventure Into the mainstream of the uninhibited pleasures
of mechanical and human exhibitionism. It's traditional and bizarre at the
same time. It·s not often you run into a middle-aged midwestern couple,
just retired and enjoying a jaunt on their Gold Wing. soclellzlng with a hard
core H__y rider who'. been on the road ever .Incelast year's rally.
For some participants. Sturgis is the culmination of months of cereful
mechanlcel and artful preperatlon of machinery. For others It's the long
awaited vacation of the year; a chance to party all night and not have to
worry about sattlng the alarm for work the next day.
This y.... Black Hills Rally was reputed to be more family oriented. more
taehnologlcelly-c:ustom oriented than ever before. Occeslonal heavy rains
nearly flooded out the cempers in city park. and packed peopla Into tha
local eating/drinking establishments; which also sarved to boost the
chances of panIcIpants whose rally objectives wera purely social.
As you can ... from the photos, It takes all types to play out the
particular roIea neces.ary to the successful outcome of this annual week
long event. From the sanlor citizen flipping pancakes. to the guy trying to
revive an old fad and aI the novelties in between, each individual or group
effort is a part of the whole scene.
Attendance was reported by participants to be about the same as last
y.- (approximately 30.0001. Is it possible that the Washington fads. with
their threats of fuel and economy crisis being spoon-fed to the public on a
dally basis. have not yet instilled paranoia into the lives of at least one
segment of American life style? You got It. Classic Week at Sturgis draws
the people that just won't let the good times pass them by.
