CRC's backwards motocross By Nanette Marie VALENCIA, CA, AUG. 19 The California Racing Club now has a reputation among riders as being a club that likes change. Each week they run upon the sands of Indian Dunes Motorcycle Park. and each time there's a different track awaiting the riders. Last Sunday, Jack Barbacovi, head of the club, not only revised· the International track again, but ran it backwards to boott And, no matter if a rider rode the track in two practice sessions and both of his matos, he still couldn't get totally used to the course. It was like riding a whole new track in a new and different area of Indian Dunes. In the Pro classes, it was Can·Am's Donnie Hansen doubling victories as he won both motos of both the 250cc and Open Pros. LOP's Mike. Brown defeated AJ Baker/Yamaha Support rider Johnny O'Mara in both motos of the 125cc Pros for that class overall. The 125s were first out of the gate, and in both motos Brown took the I}oleshot while O'Mara tagged along in second. Each moto Brown pulled away IOwards the end of the moto, and O'Mara cruised in for second. A.]. Whiting played catch-up both motos and blew by John Whelchel, who fell while running third in the first moto, and 'Eddie Perry for third overall. Hansen began his four-molO win streak in the 250s, when he holeshot both motos and ran away from LOP's Mark Lawrence. Lawrence picked up four second placings on the day, all behind Hansen, despite pulling close in the 500s. Third in the 250s went to Can-Am-mounted Don Draskovich, with a pair of fourths, and third Open . went to Mark White's four-four, although White had a seizing engine the entire second moto. Richard Fleming captured both motos of the Mini Beginners on ftis Thompson and Russle-sponsored Kawasaki, while Kevin Holmes ·and Eric Brune trailed. Jeff Barbacovi ran second for a lap in the first moto before the new monoshock in his YZ spit him over the bars and ended his chances of a win. In other Beginner acti~n, Pat Dalan bested a 21-rider 125cc Beginner class, topping Sam Matranga and Ben Paris, and Jeff Cameron defeated Corky Buth and Doug R,ussell for the 250cc o~erall. In the Opens, whi,ch ran along WIth the 250s, DMG rider Brian George ran away with the fITSt moto, beating Todd Holtz and Jeff Pearson, anot·her DMG rider, but in the second mota George seized his Magnum 400 one turn from the checkered flag, which blew his threequarter-lap lead over 250cc winner Cameron, and his chances for the overall. Pearson picked up the overall with a 3-1 score, topping Holtz's 2-2, and George picked up third overall with his 1-4 push-across finish. Randy Johnson and Jerry Cochran traded moto wins in the 125cc Novices, while Dennis Hulen crashed his way back from early leads and second spots to third overall. Johnson's 2-r earned him the overall, besting Cochran's 1-3. . Intermediates had the largest turnout of any classes, as 22 125s lined ,up to race. At the end of both matos, Steve Hutchens took the overall with a pair of mota victories over Glenn Cave. Matt Whiting picked up third overall with a 3-4 score. Twenty-six 250cc Intermediates were run together, and at the end of the day Jeff Prieur's 7-1 took it overall. Randy Morales picked up second with a 2-7 score to beat Jim Coffey's 1-8 tally. In . th~ Opens, Steve Blazek captured both mota wins for the overall, ahead of Tom Jenkins and Dan Moore. Results 2SO NOV: 1. Den Rager (Honl; 2. Paul Bebek lHanI; 3. Tom Aquino (Mai)' 500 INT: 1. Reisinger heads 250cc Pros at SSMMX By Terry Whytal ORANGE, CA, AUG. 18 Kawasaki rider Roben Reisinger kept his KX 250 wired to the stops as he held off all challengers to take the top money at this week's SSM MX. Reisinger's top competition came from Maico riders Huff Hadley and Greg Robertson and Honda-mounted D.arrel Willoughby. Robertson jumped to the early lead in moto one followed by Reisinger and Can-Am rider Kurt Sofka. Hadley held down fourth position at the end of lap one and Willoughby was fiftp-. Hadley slipped by Sofka on the second lap and Willoughby followed a lap Speedway 117125cc Intermediate winner Ken Coon. later. Robertson was really working the legendary Maico handling as he he'ld off repeated challenges from Reisinger. At the halfway point Robertson began to open a little . breathing room as Hadley put pressure on Reisinger. Postions remained the same until three laps from the fmish when Robertson fell off the pace and started fading. In a flash Reisinger grabbed the lead and Hadley moved into second. Reisinger held on to finish first ahead of Hadley while Rt>bertson slipped to fourth behind Willoughby. The second moto was a near repeat of the first with Robertson again taking the lead. Reisinger glued himself on Robertson's rear fender and the race was on .. Willoughby was holding the third position ahead of Hadley and Maico rider Randy Rodriguez. Robertson looked even better in this mota, stuffing the bike into turns and throwing roosts coming out but yet he couldn't shake Reisinger off his' tail. Hadley and Willoughby were haying quite a dice for third place until Willoughby bailed off hard at the top of Webco Hill and DNF. Hadley didn't have a chance to relax, however, as Rodriguez moved up to take Willoughby's place. Four laps from the checkered flag Reisinger powered his way around Robertson and into the lead. Robertson tried desperately to regain the front spot but at the flag it was Reisinger in first, Robertson second and Rodriguez in third after slipping past Hadley. Overall the winner was Reisinger followed by Robertson, Hadley and Rodriguez. Team Suzuki rider Scott Gillman came out oil. top of the Open Pro class after two close rides courtesy of Yamaha riders Mark Lawrence and Pete Wanket. Gillman led the first moto before taking himself out in a tum and Jetting Lawrence into the lead. Gillman remounted to finish second behind Lawtence and Maico rider Arden Hadley finished third after an excellent ride had him challenging for the lead. Lawrence looked to be the winner of the second mota, le'lding most of the race with Gillman c1os" behind. With a few laps to go Gillman began charging hard and it looked like he might catch Lawrence near the end but just then Lawrence's bike whiskered a plug and barely finished the last two laps~ Gillman took over the lead and rode to the checkers while Wanket slipped into second ahead of Lawrence. Gillman was the overall winner with Lawrence second and Wanket third.. Results . OPEN PRO: 1. Scott Gilman (SuzI; 2. Pete Wonket IYom). 2SO PRO: 1. Robert Reioinger (Kaw); 2..
