one and re-started last. But he'd skinned his right arm and aggravated the knee injury that has plagued him all year and he pulled out one lap later and decided not to start race two. Lackey started poorly in both races and struggled around to ninth and seventh places on his Kawasaki. ow Malherbe has overtaken both men in the points standing with Lackey fourth on 146 points and Mikkola fifth with 138. After the 1978 washout Belgian GP the sun shone all weekend this year. DeCoster led Malherbe and Mikkola off the line at the start of race one but at the end of the first lap Noyce was up I there second; Malherbe held third ahead of Dutchman Gerard Rond (Suzuki), West German Herbert Schmitz (Maico) and Swede Hakan Andersson (Husqvarna). Seventh was Belgian Ivan Van Den Broeck (Maico), chased by the 1979 world 125cc champion Belgain dangerman Harry Everts (Suzuki). DeCoster had a seven-second lead on lap two and just pulled away throughout the race for a clear victory. Malherbe chased Noyce, greedy for victory, and after some close scrapping he took over ~he runner-up spot on lap nine as Noyce wisely decided to ride a tactical race. Rond, Schmitz, Andersson, Everts and Van Den Broeck engaged in a terrific five-way tussle that sorted itself out when Andersson slowed with a split silencer, Van Den Broeck went out with a broken rear wheel, and super-fast Everts established his supremacy in fourth. Everts, who like Malherbe, was desperate for home honours, tailed Noyce for two laps before coming past to take third place and he began to close on Malherbe. In the closing stages of the race he passed Malherbe after some incredible devil-may-care riding and set off after DeCoster. But he crashed twice in the last two laps and Malherbe soon had his second place back. Everts finished third ahead of Noyce. Schmitz was next: "Noyce needs the points more than me," he said later. DeCoster took off again first in race two and again Malherbe sat on his tail. Rond made third _on lap one from Jean-Jacques Bruno (KTM), Van Den Broeck and Noyce. Everts was tenth. But DeCoster was magnificent; he'd pulled out a whopping 40-second lead by the time he suffered the rear tire puncture four laps from the end. With DeCoster in from the crowd's attention focussed on the battle far· ther down the field. Malherbe held second until DeCoster slowed. Rond. Van Den Broeck and Bruno battled all the race long but their positions were unchanged at the flag; Rond finishing behind Malherbe. Down in eighth and ninth places Lackey and Everts delighted the crowd with a super tussle on their own. For six laps they engaged in a real set-to but as Lackey slowed towards the end Everts won' out. At the flag Malherbe had a six-second advantage over Rond. • Results 1. A. Malherbe (Belgium, Honl; 2.
