Even though there were only three meetings in the series, the total involvement came to more than 1,400 riders, averaging nearly 450 per race. Our sponsors were the best, too. IRC Tires helped out in promotion and with $4,500 for the Pro riders. We must also acknowledge the efforts of Suzuki West, Malcolm Smith and Canoga Park Suzuki, shops that provided the $1,000 in gift certificates each weekend. We would also like to express our gratitude to the participating tracks, especially to Jim Johnson over at Racing World. It was their last motocross race before shutting down, and Jim could have taken a "why bother" attitude toward track prep, Instead. he made the best track yeti He didn't have to, but he did, and we thank him. We have taken the response by the riders to heart, too. Look for another great CRC motocross series to be coming back at.you soon. Until then. thanks for your participation in this 0~1 JACK BARBACOVI &: JERRY McNEAL California Racing Club Carson. CA Grandma Duckbackers unitel As the Phantom Duck of the Desert is an ideal. so is Grandma Duckbacker. I want my grandchildren to see as much of "our" public lands as possible before they're all closed. The Bureau of Land Management is making a power play - not only in California. We saw it in Montana, Idaho and Wyoming. We have to stop them now before it's too late. The forestry department is doing an acceptable job in northern California, so why do we need the BLM stepping in? The Barstow 10 Vegas trail ride is only one protest to the BLM. Besides letters to official offices (which conveniently getlost) and dollars to the Duck (which aren't enough), the biggest protest has to be the people. Let's go for itl B·to· V 1979. I hope to see lots of Grandma Duckbackers out there this year (Grandpas, too), so let's give the Duck a needed rest. Let's "de· Ducked" the BLM. GRANDMA DUCKBACKER Taught at Scott Scott Community College In Bettendorf, Iowa, is offering an extensive course of study in Motorcycle Mechanics. We have been teaching motorcycle mechanics for about· 10 years, and we have hundreds of graduates that are working as mechanics, service managers and par~s counter people. A number of our graduates own and operate their own motorcycle shops. Our staff members are professional mechanics and annually attend a variety of factory service schools to keep up-to·date on the latest developments in the motorcycle industry. Our school is accredited by the North Central Accrediting Association; our course is approved for veterans and we have been recommended by Honda, Yamaha and Harley Davidson. Our course is divided into four quarters and is 11 months long. Classes meet five days a week with -a two· hour lecture and a four· hour shop period each day. Classes usually have ten to twelve students to one instructor whicb offers a good chance for individual attention. Some of the courses offered are Tools and Safety, Four·stroke Theory, Two·stroke Theory, Four·stroke Overhaul, Clutches and Transmission, Two· stroke Engine Overhaul,. Welding. Frame Design. Frame Straightening. Suspension Systems, Carburetion. Ignition Systems. Charging Systems. Tune·up Procedures. Performance Increase and B"usiness Management. If students would like to extend their education to incorporate more welding. machine shop, metallurgy, physics or other technical courses. we have courses in these areas also. Students are taught to use our dynomometer, valve seat grinder, hydraulic. press, drill press micrometers, bore gauges, crankshaft truing stand, oscilloscope. boring bars, frame table. hones. electronic i1 I am writing you as to some of the remarks Roxy Rockwood made in your National Papers column. I get tlie feeling that he considers it to be a W greater feat to win 25 and 26 Nationals in five and six years (Roberts and Springsteen) than it is to win 27 and 28 in 12 years (Leonard and Markel). He does not mention. however, that the number of Nationals held each year has greatly increased in recent years. maybe even doubled. I think Bart Markel and Joe Leonard deserve far more credit for holding on to these records than they have been given. .They are surely two of the .best in AMA history. BRIAN LEE KAVANAUGH San Jose, CA Leonard, Markel, Roberts and Springsteen were, and stiU are, legends in their oum times. In virtuaUy all types of sports competition, records are set only to be broken again and again. It s no different in motorcycle competition. Leonard and Markel were the heroes of yesterday. Roberts and Springsteen are the heroes of today. Ten years from now, yet another brilliant competitor will be making his mark in the history books, but all of these men will be remembered and credited for their contributions to the sport. Hopefully, they will be remembered as outstand· ing performers rather than statistics . .. Editor. Let's get on with it Let's hear it for tbe AMAI It's so easy to criticize them, yet we forget what a good job they do compared to the FIM and other sanctioning bodies. They've held hearings and commit· tee meetings for months on this 500/ 750 rule and have come to a firm decision regarding 1980 and 1981. Now let's get with the program, support the association, and build the sport. Thirteen different winners in the first half of the season? Yau can bet that NASCAR and USAC can't match that recordl We've got great Class C National racing. all we need now is some serious a ttention to the grass roots Class C racinjt. I think it is interestinjt that exactly 10 years ago (1969) the Harley·Davidson 750cc flathead was deprived of its protection from the 500cc ohv machines. and Harley·Davidson was forced to race inch for inch with the rest of the competition. Well, they hung in there. only winning one of the next five National championships. Well, the 750cc Grand National Championship offers a million dollars in prizes and contingencies, a major sponsor, Winston, and great racing coast to coast. Let's get on with businessl ROD PINK Danbury. CT
